Advice on using Twiceborn
I am interested in cutting down on the gold upkeep for my mages in one game. The death spell Twiceborn is one of my options.

Do folks have advice on how to get your mages killed without give them a ton of afflictions? I have tried drowning them, by going underwater and then dropping off their waterbreathing gear, but that doesn't seem to work.

I could give them a Rod of the Leper King, but that would take 10 turns to kill them off and many chances at afflictions.

Any help here?

Making your mages commit suicide forcefully isn't usually the best option. It is better to use the mages that have been twiceborned properly in combat, as the new provinces you can earn with proper warfare will easily pay back the upkeep cost, and if the unit happends to die, it becomes upkeep free.

I think suiciding them against PD works just fine. Sure, they probably will pick an affliction, maybe two if you are unlucky, but generally you dont care if your wight mage gets most of the afflictions. Only ones that are devastating are feebleminded and mute, but you just have to live with it. Also if your mage has blood, he can later use blood ritual to get rid of afflictions.

Gift of Health is cheapest way to cure afflictions on multiple commanders and units in SP. A very powerful global that is often an "I win" button. Helps with curing your thugs and ordinary troops too. It can cure the afflictions that immortals accumulate now and Tartarians in the late game if you get that far in Conjuration.

Another method I've heard about but not tested yet is taking a Recuperation bless and then giving the commander a shroud. I think that cures afflictions unless the mage has old age and has been confirmed to work on Tartarians so should work on your Wights. Of course that means your Wight mage will be stuck with shroud but you only need to use one if the affliction is bad. Some of your twiceborn mages could avoid serious afflictions and be able to wear better armours if you want to use them as thugs.

Am I wrong that going Twiceborn can remove afflictions? Specifically remembering one of Marcus Aurelius' videos where he got a hero diseased and spent a whole episode figuring out how to save her. When she became a wight mage I'm pretty sure the afflictions from disease we're gone. Maybe just a bad memory but....

I've seen Twiceborn remove afflictions, but it's not 100% effective. I suspect it uses the same process as an immortal unit getting rid of afflictions when it dies, but don't have any hard data to support that.

Well, given that I'd say it's a wash to intentionally kill a commander with Twiceborn eh? I do think the comment about using them for war and not suicide makes good sense though

I am using twiceborn in my current game as Shinuyama. Sometimes it remove afflictions but rarely.

I got imortal hero Yukinaga and on his first batlle he got affliction that made him -5 movement. That made him useless. Later he got deseased and died. One his returned he didn't had desease but kept his affliction.

Anyway twiceborn is great for Shinu. At least 10 Bakemono Sorcereses I lost who came back with twiceborn.
