I'm a little puzzled why you are enthused about them as Yomi, given that Yomi has tons of recruitable D2 mages. Gold must be really tight for you if you'd rather spend 12 death gems than 65 gold. (Revenant + Staff = 18 gems; Namanari + Hannya Pact = 65 gold and 6 gems; difference = 12 gems.)
Note BTW that Revenants can still create copies of themselves, using a Skull Staff. For a nation like Marignon which has to break into death via a pretender (or lucky indies), possibly via cross-site paths like Dying Forest (N1 site, discoverable by indy tribal shamans, that produces death gems) this can be really great.
For pure research though you're better off forging Skull Mentors.
Yomi has a huge amount of uses for death gems - darkness casts, skull mentors, skull staves, shikome; I have honestly never used a revenent on the nation, though on C'tis who hard rushes enchantment 5 I tend to spam them pretty hard early on for the RP boost.
