Eater of Dead
I had my mage cast eater of the dead and got the unit next turn.
Then I decided I liked that unit and told my mage to cast it again.

I got no unit, but the gems were consumed....
IS there a limit of 1 and if so, shouldn't the game refuse the ruitual like it does spells you dont have enough gems for?

Some units are unique. I don't remember this one in particular, but it very well might be... What does the description say?

If you resummon/recruit a unique unit controlled by you it's respawned in the caster's province. The older copy is removed from the game.

Eater of the dead is unique, so you can´t get another one. Also the ritual cost for casting it second time is meant to punish hostile nations who try to cast the spell after it has already been summoned.

What? Lol...you mean punish new players whom don't have thier spells memorized.

No, perhaps a side effect but hey if you want to feel terrible about it feel free. But the mechanic has a clear purpose.

Well, I don't see the purpose being "to punish hostile nations", because that makes zero sense. I do see the purpose being to get a fresh on in a new location, but it could at least hint at that in the description.

It's a gamble and rewards a solid spy network. Each of those summons is powerful enough it's pretty much guaranteed to show up in the army summary. I'd support a partial refund myself on a failed summon. And yes the resummoning in a new location is a neat feature for the owner. With one caveat however, unique units don't lose their afflictions on resummong, for both the original owner and any future owner.

Its thematic. Its not about who has what memorized.

Its about there being some really awesome summons that all nations compete over. Its a race to the finish line.

There is one Eater of the Dead which multiple nations may race to get. The fact that one nation may already have summoned the unit does not somehow remove the cost of the ritual.

Oh, well, that changes things. Did not know this.

i love the eater. tho i'm not sure it's even worth what it costs. pretty easy to kill it, in MP anyway

I'm not sure I understand why the Eater of the Dead is unique, though? Isn't it just some kind of flesh golem that any powerful enough necromancer could create?

Because it is a creature summoned from the void (banished there by the previous pankrator), The mage does not create it.

ever see the eater at it's strongest? you'll know why he's one of a kind!!

Its an extremely powerful unit summoned with Astral pearls. Its not so much the unit as the Astral pearl requirement that makes it significant in this case.

Late game summons for blood and death are significant and extremely powerful, but there are relatively few units summoned otherwise. The Eater of the Dead and Abomination (Astral pearls). Ancient Presence another (water gems), Tarrasque (nature gems), and the Elemental Kings (water, fire, earth, and air gems). All the rest are either death or blood.

Also, many nations (such as monkeys or MA Pythium and Marignon) have additional late game astral summons. But yea, in nature and the aristotelician elements, they're quite rare.
