It is simply due to that the retail (I prefer to say: standalone) version can be updated directly by the developers, while an update on Steam always takes some time - until the update is acknowledged and distributed to all Steam download servers.
did i have any advantages in the steam version? gamesave in steamcloud, steam trophies or something?
it is worth to buy the steam version?
"Now there's that locator thing" - there always was btw. You need to put the .loc file in the right folder so that other players can download your skin off of you (it's P2P kinda like torrents). You will see your skin in game if you download the skin file, but unless you have the .loc file with it, others won't see your neat skin and will only see a default car.
I once trolled a 200 player server with a big ass truck that took almost all of my screen. I could barely see anything, nor could anyone else.
