This game is worse than Civilization: Beyond Earth

It weakly attempts to mimic Alpha Centauri, but everything is dumbed down (the fact that its released on Xbox and PS4 gives this away). There is no world-building, no hard science, no interesting story threads or personalities.

I guess if you want a braindead action-strategy, this game is for you.

I've played Civilization: Beyond Earth and I can state for an absolute fact that this is incorrect. Or, at the very least, I can say it as factually as you can speak to the contrary.

Can we just stop with this "console = dumbed down" fallacy already? This was true in the PS2 era because consoles simply lacked the processing power to run all the variables PC games could. This isn't the case anymore. Age of Wonders 3 was a PC-only release, and Planetfall is no shallower than AoW3. I've found it's deeper in many regards.

You're talking about story threads and personalities in a strategy game and telling me this game is "braindead action-strategy"? Since when have story threads and personalities been pivotal to a strategy game? I'll admit the leader personalities add a little something to the Civ games, but objectively speaking, they're far from necessary.

I'm going to say this once and only once, and I hope that some miracle brings every naysayer here to see it:

AGE OF WONDERS: PLANETFALL IS AN AGE OF WONDERS TITLE. AGE OF WONDERS HAS BEEN AROUND SINCE 1999. ALPHA CENTAURI WAS ALSO RELEASED IN 1999. IF THEY WERE GOING TO COPY ALPHA CENTAURI, WHY DID THEY WAIT 20 YEARS TO DO IT?

PLANETFALL IS NOT COPYING ALPHA CENTAURI. PLANETFALL IS COPYING AGE OF WONDERS 3, THE PREVIOUS TITLE IN ITS OWN BLOODY FRANCHISE.

This game is supposed to be experienced in random map mode. Building your hero and own faction, the rpg aspect combined with the empire building.

I thought BE was okay but just was missing a lot of... "Something".

I have never been sure of what it is missing. At least I can point to why I don't like Civ 6.

Beyond Earth is actually a really great game though. Calling it bad is a meme popularized by people irrationally expecting it to be SMAC2. When judged for what it is rather than what it's not it's one of the best 4x experiences out there, especially with the right mods.

AoW series were always a Civ-lite, for those with attention span shorter than a week required to play a game of Civ. So AOW:Planetfall is not "worse", it is "lighter".
