Thats what fixed it for me. After opening the game it would go to a black screen. Opened Nvidia control panel and sure enough the game was set to auto detect and run with integrated intel graphics card. Swithched it to Nvidia and it works great.
Thanks wowhowcool. Rockin on some classic Sega Dreamcast memories. Remember pre-ordering it and picking it up on 9/9/1999. I still got the Dreamcast t-shirt that came with it. I don't regret giving my Dreamcast away to a younger relative, but damn I miss playing Shenmue and some other awesome games on it.
No problem! It'd be neat if SEGA, if they'd ever make a Dreamcast 2, they would make it backwads compatible with the Dreamcast 1. But I doubt it would happen lol
Huh? I use a gamepad without having to mess with the registry. At least, not for that specific reason.
The only changes that I had to make to the registry were just what this thread instructed, in order to get the configure tool to work (which allowed remapping keys and gamepad, and to adjust window size)
And even then, it's just to correct what the game forgot to do when you installed it. (It's supposed to add the registry entry automatically, but forgets to do so, so you have to add it maunally)
But I found another solution. When I was looking deeper into that issue, some people were advocating using "patch":
http://steamcommunity.com/app/71250/discussions/0/846947320713077671/
But here it says, that this patch is actually an entire game, that replaces the old one. That sounded a little drastic and shady for my tastes. And the first comment author made was important for me to realize where the problem was:
"...
- the game can run in HD opposed to Steam's restricted 640x480
..."
And then I realized that when the game ran for the first time, it let me allow to choose the control scheme, audio and video options. Also the resolution. And since this is more than a decade old game, I thought that I could run it in the biggest resolution possible. Sonic Adventure 2 can be ran on the greatest resolution available. But Sonic Adventure DX probably can't. And that was the problem.
I set it back to the original resolution, and the game suddenly worked.
Unlike Sonic Adventure 2, the window that offers you to change the settings only appears when the game is run for the first time. To make it appear again, you must run it from Steam.
Use the client, choose library, choose Sonic Adventure DX, click the blue button "Play" and choose the second option "Configure Sonic Adventure DX".
Or, you might wanna try to really replace the game with the "patch". From how it sounds, you should be able to play it on higher resolution then. But it seems it has other drawbacks and I personally didn't try to do it. And now I do not plan to do it, since I believe it would remove all my saves.
Hope that helps.
