Is it good?
Since I have only recently been getting into Sonic (Sonic Generations and Sonic Adventure GBA, loved them both! :D) i've been thinking of being these old gems, will I enjoy them and what do old and new sonic fanboys alike recommend me getting from all these old games?

In my opinion, it has aged a lot. Much more so than its sequel. The Genesis ones are arguably the best ones, but the Adventure series is alright. I grew up playing Sonic Adventure 2 so I guess I'm a bit biased, but SA1 is kinda glitchy at times and unpolished in some areas. The plot outright sucks in both games, though.

I grew up with this game and i can recommend it to everyone i see in my opionio one of the best of the series but i have a passion for this one

The Steam PC version of Sonic Adventure DX is rather bad though, the resolution is locked at 640x480 internally, the configuration tool doesn't work unless the user creates a necessary key manually in the windows registry, the 2004 PC version was better.

Sooo, you guys reckon I get or not. Since to be honest the game looks amazing :o I am also thinking about getting Sonic CD? You guys got any views on that one..?

Oh yeah I also reckon getting Sonic and Knuckles 3, I've already played Sonic 1 on Sonic generations so that's a no go, you guys know of any must haves? :)

sonic 3 and knuckles is epic, and this game is quite fun but can be a bit glitchy since it's old.

oh and I don't see why everyone complains about the steam version of SA DX, it's not that bad. it just runs in a blue sqaure is all, the game looks and runs smoothly.

It's cheap, but I'd rather go with Sonic Adventure 2 to be honest. SA1 is fun, but I just found the sequel a whole lot better and less glitchy (though I don't know how good the PC port is). But with Steam sales, you probably have enough to buy both.

And yes, Sonic CD is great as well. Has some really cool music too.

I skipped all the comments and went striaght to typing this.

I'm not sure why people so much enjoy the older ones more than the newer ones.. not to say that they're no good, they're definitely the best of their time. But the new games actually give you a stronger sense of speed. The sense of urgency (not speed) that you get from playing the older games is that you can't see where you're going if you get up to pace.

Sonic Generations.. make that your very last purchase. It's the best game on Steam, and that goes without question, but it's a much better experience after playing all of Sonic's most well-known games a few years.

Sonic Adventure DX is probably the most hacked game on earth. Or at least in 2004-2009. The Steam version is much more limiting, since the character models were put into a packed file. Its original release, Sonic Adventure, was to be the ultimate Sonic game back in 1998, featuring a taller, stronger Sonic, and for the first time in a canonical Sonic feature, a voice. Along with Tails, Knuckles, Amy, and 2 others that would only appear as playable characters in this game (one had the gall to return later in Sonic Heroes), this is the first Sonic game with a rotating camera and more than one plot twist. Sonic and friends try to stop Robotnik (this is the first game they call him "Eggman" but after I got older, I realized to question how Sonic calling him Eggman with only Tails to witness would cause Knuckles and Amy to call him the same thing) from "feeding" the Chaos Emeralds to a creature only known as Chaos. Chaos' body is pretty much water with a brain.

Though if you want to start with moderately-old Sonic games (mid-franchise) I would recommend you start with Sonic Adventure 2 (or SA2B if you wanna get the DLC, which is extremely cheap. I recommend you start with SA2 and if it gets boring, SOME MIRACLE HOW, get SA2B. Not a ton of differences, but the chao gardens definitely throw you off).

Sonic Adventure 2 (Battle) takes you for a new ride on the dark side, which has yet to be done a second time in the entire Sonic franchise. Yeah, there's a Team Dark in Sonic Heroes, but they're considerably good guys that just have anger issues that they want to trade for answers. Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles do their usual job of fighting through Eggman's plots and saving the world, while Eggman, Shadow, and Rouge fight for world domination.. though every dark alliance will have its share of secrets to cause its crumble. An interesting twist that kind of makes things easy for developers was that Sonic and Tails can't mass-produce robots, so instead of making Eggman doing the same (since they're all playable characters), Shadow's very slight resemblence to Sonic puts SONIC in the sight of the government's wanted list, and anyone who helps him out. Obviously, whoever helps out Eggman is also undesirable, so either team will be fighting G.U.N. robots.

The highlight of the Sonic Adventure series for ALOT of people is the chao garden. Along with being cute, there are also many genetic alterations that you can do.. but it's best to not learn too much about them too quickly (or to at least try to learn too much). It'd be like starting your driver's training on a ski slope.. but to cover the basics, you give a chao an animal, they gain some of the same body parts, physical abilities, and behavioral characteristics of that animal. Feed your chao different kinds of fruit (they have favorites and dislikes). Some fruit can alter their polarity, and.. one alters their fertility. But at least they let it remain a child-safe game ||D

Older Sonic games, you want to start off with Sonic or Sonic 3. Sonic CD is also a pretty good way to start. There IS a period of time between the Genesis games and Dreamcast games, so don't be afraid to go exploring elsewhere on the internet if you want a computer-friendly version of SEGA Saturn games, like Sonic R. Oh man, easiest game in existence when you get used to it. It takes me literally an hour to unlock absolutely everything in the game on the hardest difficulty, no cheats of any sort. Well, I prefer the winter (you don't have to fall in the water that way).

Another good title on the GBA is Sonic Battle. Something about the game, ESPECIALLY if you're a preteen, just helps you bond with the characters. It could be the main character, it could be the music. I'm really not sure.

Either way, welcome to the Sonic fanbase! ^^ Just please please please don't become one of those people who calls themselves a fan and then hates every Sonic game that comes out ._. there are entire networks dedicated to living that idea and completely denying it. Like the "Sonic Zone" or "The Sonic Stadium". If you encourage the more fun, recent, faster Sonic games, you will be banned. I know, I've tried a handful of times on both sites.

Sonic 06, by the way, is a great game. I recommend that you buy it on PS3 because there are 2 reasons why it's not a surprise there are fewer glitches. The developers started on it probably at about the time Sonic Heroes came out, but with the thought of HD graphics in mind (plus some 4 other Sonic games, AND one not-Sonic game also made by SonicTeam), they didn't have tons of time to work on it, and they had a strong focus on its graphics more than its physics. Alot of it can be shoddy, and the only speed you get is with Sonic, in certain parts, but it's debatably the fastest Sonic game in that regard. Just don't whine or complain when a glitch messes you up. Actually, alot of glitches need to be player-induced. For example, yes, you can stand upside down on a loop. But don'tcha think that they wanted the player to get all the way through?

I should stop here before I start telling you every single thing about Sonic that I know. I could probably write an entire college-course-sized document on what I know in Sonic Adventure 2 Battle, so.. yeah ||D sorry for eating so much time.

Sonic is distantly my favorite game series. Just don't start hating it. Once you do, you'll be biased to enjoy everything in the game world that sucks.

Everybody thanks for the replies! And shonow I would like to thank you personally for your great "article". The sad thing is, I've already played Sonic Adventure 2 I found out yesterday... I was looking at my old gamecube games and poof there it was. So yeah I thinking I am gonna go for CD, Adventure 1 and Sonic 3 since most people seem to love them all :).

the old port was better, but this works and is probably easier to get to run. I noticed the savegames from the old port work in this one so I guess that's nice.

If you want to play SADX correctly, look for the Gamecube or PC version. I didn't play this Steam version, nor plan to do so unless I find a working patch to remove the purple things on the border. But still, it's a great game nonetheless. I played the 2004 version already and completed it. ALMOST got all emblems and ALMOST cleared all missions. (Damn you, Ice Cap Sonic mission to get to dat balloon, DAMN YOU. T.T)
If I remember correctly, the only Sonic 3 version in Steam is the & Knuckles one, I ain't entirely sure. But still, BUY IT.
The First Sonic Game I played when I was a kid was Sonic Adventure 1 on the Dreamcast. The Game had absolutely no glitches or other issues while I played it on there. I got the version on Steam, and it's basically the exact same game. I would suggest paying the extra money (Approx $10 more) and buying a Dreamcast bundle from Ebay. The Game is much better on the Dreamcast, plus you'll get a lot more cool games for the Dreamcast, which I believe is the best console of it's generation (1999-2002)

Nah this is the beast Sonic game. If you move a file from steamapps to my documents you can edit the settings and they save so you can run it at a larger res then 640x480 and it uses Xbox 360 controllers fine but I havent tried other controllers.
