When he lines up the tail lights for you to Homing Attack, you have to wait until Eggman says "See if you can make it through here, Sonic".
If you attack before he says "See--", the tail's hitboxes won't be in place, and your Homing attack will mess up and you'll die.
But once he says "See--" that's your cue, the hitboxes are ready. You should be able to hit Eggman by the time he says "Sonic".
Aside from that, when he launches those spinning wheels, just time your jump as best as you can. You'll need to be standing on a wheel to reach the cockpit.
Aside from that, it's just a matter of practice.
One thing to remember: Egg Viper does have a "Kaizo Trap" (that is: a trap that can kill you in your moment of victory).
While the Egg Viper is exploding, Eggman will go for one final attack to destroy the platform Sonic is standing on. If Sonic dies at this part, Eggman still wins.
(Tikal will give you a quick warning seconds before he does it (Tikal: "Be careful, he's up to something!"))
This time, he breaks the platforms a lot more and his suicide attack is largely telegraphed.
Faults in the game or not, I prefer the Egg Wyvern over the Egg Viper but it's good to see it's origins, like Heavy Dog and Blue Falcon being a different but much stronger battle than Big Foot and Hot Shot/Flying Dog. (Spamming the Quad SPNKR on them notwithstanding)
Still, it could feel a little less robotic (no pun intended) in a degugged PC re-release.
I thought Eggman said "AROWAROWAROWAROW!" like he was coaching his robots on a boating trip.
Either way, what's the translation? (not what the English track has, there's a difference)
I found out recently that Eggman might be saying "'aho aho aho aho" which when translated, means he is calling Sonic a "r.etard" or a "f.ucker". At least that what it appears; one of the translation meanings on the site where I learned this was censored with 5 or 6 asterisks, so I could only guess.
And I thought Sonic saying "S.hit!" when the Egg Carrier transforms was the only instance of swearing in SA1. (This is all in the original voice track, not the English dubbing)
