It is 3d and the game you are currently commenting on. It's hard to say which sonic game is the best for new comers. Sonic adventure is nice, personally enjoy the sequel much more, maybe Generations would be a good introduction having both 2d and 3d segments. If you want to try 2d, go with Sonic 2, either get a rom or if you want to, get Origins if you think it's worth it or not.
Stop bothering ppl blepp.:.. GOTTA GO FASTT

If you want to try out SA DX I suggest getting the BetterSADX mod, it restores dream cast content and fixes bugs introduced in the DX version of the game. It should be used so you don't have a poor experience with wonky glitches. I think SA 2 is a bit more plug n play but it's been a hot minute. Generations is the same and acts as a nice compilation of worlds and levels from previous Sonic games as well as the boost formula

That's a good one too.

Adventure 2 is definitely the better and more replayable game of the two mainly due to its excellent ranking system, high skill ceiling and extra content, but I'd recommend the first game (this one) instead of 2 to start with as it's a lot more beginner friendly by comparison.

For 3D, start with both Adventure games, preferably on Dreamcast and/or modded to be more like the Dreamcast versions on PC. Use the Retranslated mod and Japanese voices for better experience, though you may need to check these videos for FMV and credits scene dialog which don't have subs. (Heroes was the first to add subs in FMV cutscenes)

Next, play Heroes, Shadow and 2006 as well as P-06 to see how the latter should have gone. Those and any later ones must be Retranslated mod/JP voices too. Bear in mind some don't have them like 2006, World Adventure, Colors and Lost World, and others like Shadow Retranslated for Gamecube and the latest SA2 one have glitches e.g. dub text instead of the actual translations or spelling errors in the subs in certain scenes.

For 2D, I recommend the Sonic Advance trilogy first as well as Pinball Party, Battle and the two Rush games. Then play the classics, Sonic 4, Flickies Island (Saturn/Original PC CD version), Mania and the DS versions of Colors & Generations.

Sonic Generations and Sonic Adventure DX. The gameplay and level designs are great. And if you have a favorite stage you can replay it anytime. Which is great for replayability.

Sonic Adventure 1 and Sonic Adventure 2 are the best 3D games and serve as a good starting point if you’re interested in the characters

If you want to start with 2D: Origins is a great way to play them. It has it's problems but since you're new to the series, you won't even notice any. They're the kind of problems that only get noticed by people who have been playing these games for 20+ years.

If you want 3D: Sonic Generations is a pretty good start. Is uses the boost formula, which sonic has been using for quite awhile now, and will continue to use (even his next game, which is open world, is still very much a boost game in terms of controls and physics.
Another benefit to generations, is it being a celebration title and using locations from Sonic's past. So if a certain character or stage catches your eye, you can use that as a basis to see what game to try next.

Sonic Adventure 1 & 2 are great if you want to see what Sonic can be like with an actual overarching story that boils down to more than "Eggman Bad Man", but they do show their age a little bit so be wary of it and be willing to cut them some slack and realize these are games from back when polish wasn't as common.
