Voice acting
What do you think of the voice acting in this game? And in the Sonic games in general. Don't you love those long awkward pauses of silence Sonic does throughout many of his games hahah.

Tbf, this game was the first time the VA's voice acted their respective characters. As time went on, they did better at voice acting their characters until they got replaced and then new ones had to learn how to do THEIR respective characters. Early Ryan & Early Jason are almost COMPLETELY different compared to Late Ryan & Late Jason. They sounded better, smoother, and more in touch with Sonic than when they first started.

In SA1/SADX? It's so awful, it's borderline hilarious. Original Resident Evil doesn't even come close to that.
In the series, overall? It's mixed bag. It works in some games (Unleashed, Riders) and not in others (06, Colors).

Absolutely not. It can actually get kind of boring and really brings down the overall presentation. Thankfully, this was the only game in the series to do that - ever since Adventure 2, they stopped with the awkward pauses in-between voice clips, and even when they don't talk, they're at least doing something.

I agree, Sega should've left them mute

I love the voice acting. Though I've heard that the developers in charge of directing the voice actors spoke very little English.
Tikal and Eggman are my favorites.

Yep and they would make them say lines that would just not be natural for people who spoke English. (I.E. Teriaaaaaaaaa).

A fun fact if you didn't know: Ryan original applied for the role of Big The Cat and had a pretty good shot at getting it. Whoever was in charge though turned him down for that role because Ryan didn't look like Big The Cat. So, they hired Ryan as Sonic because I guess he looked like Sonic and casted Duke Nukem who was a big man at the time to play Big The Cat.

I also love the voice acting, and even the worst performances can be enjoyed in a "so bad it's entertaining" way. I'm just not a fan of the way there's so many awkward pauses in-between scenes. I'm no movie director, but I have worked on my own videos before so I know what it's like to have moments of nothing going on during scenes.

I stick with the Japanese voices and Windii's subs in the retranslated mods. Am working towards not needing those mods in the future. I used to not mind the English for SA2, Sonic 2006 and the others but I was a kid at the time (early teens for later games), plus I always found Generations & SA1's voice acting in English to be grating at times, especially Roger's awful Sonic voice. For the Dreamcast era actors, it wasn't their fault however and more the fault of the localised script writer & english voice directors.

Honestly, the only Sonic game I happily play in both English & Japanese is Shadow the Hedgehog as its dub was actually good for once, as well as having the best English cast. The voice direction is just so much better in the original Japanese however, there's even swearing in the dialog (about as much as Shadow has, and ironically less of it in Shadow itself compared to the dub as swears work different in Japan) and Junichi Kanemaru not only has an awesome voice, but any English Sonic line he does is great, thanks to him teaching the language on the side. He'd make a cool teacher for both English & Japanese.

And Eggman is at his best with Chikao Otsuka embodying both Eggman's comical and dark sides at once, which we wouldn't see abroad until Mike Pollock.

Oh that's so cool! I never thought to use any Japanese language option in Sonic, which is stupid of me because I much prefer Sonic X in Japanese!

Well, using japanese VA is a bit weebish but I guess it's less bad.

Colors had a better VA overal (and Mike Pollock is the best Robotnik)

Yeah, but be warned. I'm not sure if Tails VA in Japanese is a child, but his voice is so grating to hear. Especially when screaming.

Me personally, I'd rather hear "I wonder what happened to Sonic." than the screams Tails produces.

Yeah, Tails's actor is a little better in SA2, but he's pretty annoying in SA1. Heroes fixed that though with his current one, who also voiced him in Sonic X. Thankfully Tails' most annoying screams are only during his episode intro cutscene.

Kind of sad that Sonic Advance 3 was the last game in the series to use the Adventure voice cast for these characters, especially with Eggman's "You're going to pay for this!" at the end of every boss, making every encounter feel all the more satisfying.

Indeed. The voices for the og English cast were at their best in Advance 3, which is where I first heard them next to SA2 on gamecube. When I played the Japanese version on Virtual Boy Advance at least 10 years later, it was even better and no less memetic, especially as Eggman yells "Damn you! (おのれ!)" instead of "you little!".
