There anren't enough interactions you can do, just feed them gruit, animals and stuff like that. It's also a bit odd to have a pet sim side game taking about as long, if not longer, as the main game. I'm not one of those people who think Sonic games should only have Sonic and exactly one gameplay type but when I'm playing Sonic I want a platformer, not a pet sim or an RTS or whatever the hell.
I'm not saying it wasn't good, I'm saying you don't have nearly enough control and things to do in it and it's a big too ... big.
Other than that, I like it.
Locking content behind this grindfest (GameGear games in original DX, Metal Sonic) is not.
At least in the Dreamcast days I replayed them because I wanted to explore the levels and see if I could find every ring in all of the SA2 ones (Which I found out was a stupid idea more than a decade later because there are rings out of bounds, impossible to reach) but nowadays I already know pretty much everything about these games so I no longer need to explore ♥♥♥♥.
Sega could do so much more with them now, I would love to see them return.
Station Square: Antiques shop in city hall area. Requires rock from location of Chaos 0 boss fight.
Mystic Ruins: A ledge overlooking the pond. Press a nearby button to get.
Eggman Island: The Egg is on the EggCarrier, in one of the cells.
Time only passes in the garden itself and it passes sooo slowly. Raising the Chao was cryptic and I really didn't know how to do it right, even with the SA2 tutorial.
It's worse on Dreamcast as in order to get unique seeds, toys and such, you had to either get them on the Chao Garden's original Black Market which was a website like Martian Buddy for the original Doom 3 as opposed to being in the game, and/or play Chao Adventure on the VMU outside the console. I haven't even started on that yet since getting Japanese GD ROMs for my physical Dreamcast.
The Chao races and Karate are basically the bonus stages from Rayman 2, which I hate (the bonus stages, not Rayman 2 itself). What really p.isses me off however is that the Chao garden is not optional in SA2 unlike SA1, as you have to win the events and unlock the other gardens as one part of the boring journey to unlock Green Hill without cheating, which ties for annoyance with the all A Rank requirement.
These were the main reasons I just cheat and use an 100% save file (Dreamcast and Xbox) or the mod loader (PC) to get Green Hill instead as I have no time nor patience for that just to get what should be an end of last story reward like getting all secrets in Tomb Raider 3 (which is much easier) to unlock its bonus level.
I don't mind it coming back in the Adventure remake and/or the 2006 remake if it stays optional only and does not contribute to emblems (adventure games) and gold coins/medals (New Sonic AKA Sonic 2006).
