Also check out some of the player made modules and mods on
Id suggest checking out multiplayer as well when you get the chance. Player run servers there, varied rulesets depending on the server, lots of custom content and other people to play with.
No worries. Depends on the server some have landing areas before the real areas of the module actually start where rules and other information can be read- either on placeables(signs, etc), NPCs in conversation, your journal, books in your inventory and so on. The ways can vary so much it would take a while to list them all.
Best I can offer in this regard is to pay attention to anything given to you in the chat window and the combat log when you first log in. And cant hurt to check your quest journal both completed and not too.

Speaking from me here I bought this game a few years back and refunded it because the game didn't jive with me at the time. First thing I did was try multiplayer back then before even trying to learn the game and i had no idea what i should do confused also. I then went to SP and it felt clunky and hard to pick up. I gave up because its not like other Rpg games I guess i expected a similar experience.
This time around i am taking the opposite approach and trying to learn the game by myself and reading up etc.
Anyway I can only speak for the OC because its the only one i have tried so far. So far i have not found any farmable mobs i don't think there is any at least here. Which means gold is finite on the same hand i don't think gold is that important from my observations so far.
I have only been into Peninsula district and Blackdale or what ever its called so far and Blackdale has probably made me the most money because there is poison arrows there which sell for a lot.
On the same note i am not actively opening chests now because i feel like i read somewhere that they scale by your characters level if that is the case then you get better loot at higher levels etc so i guess leave them for later on and try and get better loot for the next zones? All though after searching for this information i cannot find it again so i am not sure if i should be looting them now lol.
We can also save characters which is something i have not done yet but will be experimenting with while i learn the game basically we can play up until any point in the game and save our characters they keep all gold items and level/stats each time so this will help in a cheeze mode way and then use those same chars in a fresh campaign.
One thing i have noticed is that there is so many chests in each zone it takes a long time to loot them all so this is also another reason why i have been leaving them cannot be bothered.
When combining all of that it is a lot of work most of that time would of been spent locating and opening chests. The ammo sells for 1 gp a full stack so is trial but i did it all as part of learning any potential meta.
After subsequent restarts of the campaign there is no way i am looting every single container it takes to long. I would happily ran back at a later point to pick up stuff if the container loot does scale though.
Quest seem to be the best way to stack up the GP fast and should be the first priority on making gold from what i have noticed so far.
If you think first chapter of OC is a slog this is definetly not a game for you.
While learning the items colors its more beneficial to sell unidentified items to the vendor then you can check the stats because they become buyable items which you can see the stats of. Some item colors i have learned i know the green gloves are beneficial to my class so i can id those for example.
This does not help if those items were beneficial to me but it is helping me to learn which colors i should look out for.
