Recommend me a role-play server
Been trying out people's persistent worlds. What are the good ones? I'm a DnD head so I know all the settings and the lore.

Arelith is probs the best in general, unless you want something niche.

I don't really have a lot of experience with servers, and the little I have is from a decade ago or so, but I think "Ravenloft: Prisoners of the Mist" is a popular RP server with a background based on DnD lore, in case that one's still around? From what I remember from back in the days, they might have a slight reputation of being a little snobbish but maybe that just means they take the role-playing part seriously and don't like Out-of-Character talk? I'd suggest to just give it a try without prejudice, but to be serious about it, too. :)

(And in any case, they made a pretty awesome UI/frame reskin that I'm still using today.)

Try Arelith

Ravenloft Prisoners is the mist is probably the best roleplay server.
If you're looking for a light MMO experience you can try Arelith but it can get pretty toxic.

Those looking for a "light MMO experience" from Arelith will get a big surprise. There is not much like that to be found but very welcoming RP community. I would say 9/10 RP server since 10/10 would require perfection and hence impossible, nothing is perfect.

But you wont get a free meal in Arelith. You must earn your place in the world like you have to do IRL. Arelith is not for you, Arelith is for Arelith. People play for the server, and there are world class role players I can tell.

I have played in Arelith for almost ten years, and served as a DM there twice.

I would regrettably disagree with your assessment - But of course anyone is welcome to find out for themselves.

I see, ok. I had to check with whom you are disagreeing, and saw you are the poster I quoted.

If we suppose you have really played in Arelith 10 years and DMed it, then that makes me really curious of Ravenloft. What you said would had made sense of Amia, beside toxicity. But Arelith being light MMO? xDDDD

About toxicity, I think that happen in every server. There are two groups which are considered to be toxic: PvP oriented players and holier than thou -players. But I would say both are minority and PvP oriented players are very fun people :D

Thanks all. I have characters on both those servers now.

Arelith. Amia. Ravenloft. Arabel. Cormyr. And a few others I can't recall are all good.

And I am always on the look out for new ones that crop up.

I DM on the Thay and the Underdark server. It doesn't have a big player base compared to Arelith or Ravenloft but it has its own unique features that kept me playing there since EE was released.

I've played on Arelith. It is good. Lots of people. There is plenty to explore, the world is big. the systems are cool. Is Arelith unique? No. Lots of servers have cool systems. Lots of Servers have plenty fo explore, and lots of servers are big. --Arelith is one of the few servers with a very very high regular population. I've played there.. I've spent a decade of my life there. Is Arelith the best? no. Is Ravenloft the best? No. what is the best? --well that depends on you. People above who have said Ravenloft is the best.. that really means it is th best for them. For 10 years I would have said that no other PW can come close to Arelith.

I no longer play on Arelith. Reasons are my own. It just isn't right for me any more. Does that make it bad? No. It's still a great experience. I just want something different.

The server I swapped to is a much smaller population server --but it is just as big as Arelth.

The player base is smaller, but the RP is equally excellent. The advantage, however, of this server over Arelith --this is my opinion--- is that this server I play on now is SO much more beautiful thatn Arelith. -sorry guys who are still on Arelith.. My pals who may read this... I logged back into Arelith recently and took my ranger up to the Weatherstone.. looked around, even at the new Guldorand City, and it doesn't hold a candle to this server I am on now.

Does that mean the server I am on now is better? Well, for me it is. What server is best? that's a dead-end question. What server is right for you? -that's a better question.

The server I am on now is The Easting Reach. The RP is great. It's as good as, any RP that I have had on Arelith.

The difference is this server is so much more detailed.

If you want to have a look, check out the screenshots and videos that I posted at the Beamdog Forums.

--What server is best... hmm... that's something that people have been fighting about since the Gamespy Chats in original NWN... There is no answer to that question.

What server is right for you? That's something you will really enjoy learning. Maybe you'll choose my server.. if not, I wish you good hunting and much fun!

Step softly!

EfU is probably the server that I've been more invested in, counting all the P&P, MUDing and forum-based gaming. It's (part of!) the reason for my salty, negative review of this game, much like the negative reviews of online games you see from people with thousands of hours clocked in when the devs make a change they can't live with. If you like very immersive RP, enjoy PvP and have dark triad traits, you will definitely find a home there. If one or several of those is lacking you might enjoy it anyway. I have personally found no server with better custom mechanics as far as classes and perks go, it's a very well-built server codewise. It might also spoil your expectations for servers permanently, so beware.

Oh I should add in regarding the Easting Reach server that I wrote about above... they have done a very nice converstion of FEATS and SKILLS to be much closer to traditional D&D, which you mentioned you were interested in

On The Easting Reach, feats like POWER ATTACK and EXPERTISE allow you to add +1, +2 or +3 to your Damage or AC (depending on PW or Expertise).... but you HAVE to have a minium of AB equal to the amount you add. so, at level 1, you cannot get the full AC bonus of +3 when you engage Expertise.

but.. that being said... when you DO reach high enough BAB to take full advantage of the +3 AC from EXPERTISE.. you ALSO have the option of manually choosing ONLY to take +2 or +1 AC... and also lessoning your penalty to attack.

Same with Power Attack... you can choose less damage and lower attack penalty --just like in PnP D&D.

Another example of the things they've done is overhaul all the skills. They've done away with "LORE" and added in actual Knowledges.. (Religion, nature, History, Geography, etc...)

--why does this matter? well.. built into the module you get lots and lots of FLAVOR TEXT describing the world. --and if you have high KNOWLEDGE NATURE... when you are in the wilderness... you get information that you have entered into the hunting grounds of a large predator.. because there is scat on the ground (revealed to you in your log as text) --but if you have high Knowledge Nature... then you are given additional information... like, that the animal is a giant tiger, and if you are a ranger.. and you have high enough SURVIVAL skill... then you can get information on the direction of the tracks, and you will know where the LAIR of the tiger is --all based on KNowledge Skills.

--KNOWLEDGE DUNGEONEERING lets you interpret runes telling you where there is safe places to camp, or that there is danger nearby. --if you are a rogue... you can interpret SYMBOLS left in Thieve's Cant so that as you wander the CITY you can know where the local FENCE is to sell your ill-gotten booty... or that there are traps nearby... etc.. etc..

They also added in scripts that eliminate skill dumps when you multi-class... that way the PURE ROGUE characters will always have higher tumble and higher disarm than the fighter with 1 level or Rogue .. because they have scripts in place to prevent people from taking 1 level in a skill-dump class to maximize skills that wouldn't normally happen under Pen and Paper D&D rules (they were really thinkin when they made this server)

--anyway.. thought I would add those details.. man I could ramble on and on about this server.

Try Ravenloft - very good roleplay server if you love difficulties.

It would be my pleasure if you would like to try my server-in-beta and provide some feedback? It is set in the late Imperial Roman era.

The Rhine is meant to host equal parts big action and big roleplay, but one must note that we are in our infancy as a server in the truest sense.
