How do I assign a Skill to my hotbar?
I can do Spells and Items just fine, but I want to assign Hide and Detect Traps to it.

Right click over hotbar button and go to special ability then stealth mode. That is hide, you cannot put detect trap because the default game auto check for traps.

When you first start a character, the default setting for the hotbar is F1 Stealth Mode, F2 Detect Mode.

I overwrote them because I didn't think they'd be more important than quick access to spells.

Wanted to mention just in case, but you get extra hotbar slots when you hold shift or Alt, so you can organise your spells better.

Right click over hotbar button and go to druid ability, then to summon companion. BTW: If you right click on your character and go to druid ability you can summon your companion, or unsummon.

They probably meant Search Mode though, which you absolutely can assign to the hotbar (@OP: it's the magnifying glass icon).

Are you saying that Search Mode does not actually help in detecting traps? I always thought it would improve your chances ...

@OP: The Search and Stealth Mode buttons are usually already in the hotbar by default, if you didn't remove them. If your character is an elf though, there is no button to toggle Search Mode on or off, because elves are automatically in Search Mode all the time, due to their Keen Sense feat. You can still add the button to the hotbar but the game won't allow you to use it.

Relevant for roleplaying in MP: the Search Mode button can also be used to make your character walk instead of run.

Sadly, even though you get three rows of hotbar slots, for a spellcaster that's often still not enough, once you reach the higher levels. Someone made a Quickcast bar mod to rectify that and free up space in the hotbar for other things than spells, but I haven't tried it myself yet, and installing/using it may be a bit advanced for someone new to the game (apparently it's not completely without issues). In any case, this is it:

Detect mode increase the range you check for traps and checks every 3 seconds instead of 6 seconds. These check are made with full skill points, but is capped for non-rogue at a DC 20. (Check ruleset.2da). Hope that helps you.

I wouldn't bother with Stealth or Detect mode on the hotbar unless I was playing a stealth character, so I'm confused why you thought it wouldn't be useful. Detect mode is also superfluous if you play an elf, because they are permanently in detect mode.

I didn't plan on using stealth at first, but I decided I wanted to go for Shadowdancer as I'm playing co-op as a Bard and it would be handy to be able to disengage at will more or less whenever an enemy is trying to attack me.
