Gameplay is comparatively slow compared to action RPGs though, because even though it's real-time (no automatic pauses, no players taking turns), behind the scenes combat is still turn-based (based on a turn-based pen and paper rule system with dice throws). Which means you tell your character to attack a certain enemy and they will keep attacking it, hitting it every few seconds or so, which also gives you time to adjust. You probably wouldn't want this to be any slower, and in cases of emergency you can still pause the game.
If taking turns without any kind of real-time action is a requirement for you, then NWN would not be suited though.
