The strongest as pure class is Cleric. No matter how you looked at it, this class has everything you need to survive in basic campaigns and many general ones by community. Offensive magic, buffs, healing, ability to wear armor without penalties to spellcasting.
The weakest as pure class is probably Ranger. This class, despite being martial is too module depended and require you to have prior knowledge to play it well. Other martial classes are more efficient and do not require to wear light armor.
The strongest for multi-classing are Sorcerer and Bard. I mean both those classes could get a level or two from other classes, like Paladin or BG (the most obvious ones) or concentrate on martial classes after some investment (RDD helps a lot in this regard). Of course, you should aim for buffs and utility spells for the latter choice.
The weakest for multi-class is probably... Wizard. As pure class it is very srong. Especially if you know what you need to do. But its main stat can't be used anywhere else (many skill points is nice but kind of hard to utilize considering how NWN is built).
