1) dont buy anything in act 1. You dont *really* need this crap, plus you will get most of it as loot anyways. Million +1 weapons and armors plus tier 1 and 2 accessories. Save your money for some gear in later game.
2) in general, just sell this loot I mentoed above. Currently finishing act 1, looted 90% of chest, at 40000 gold while spent around 10.000 (playing as monk, wanted monk stuff asap).
3) keep in mind that the best armors in first campain are like +3, and the best weapons you can craft or buy are also +1..+3. I mean, in entire game. Few unique weapons are +4 with few side effect and there only one +5 weapon you will gain after endfight (may use it in further campains tho). So just dont get too exited on buys and loot anyways. This is not Diablo 2.
4) For the first act you may want to try to craft your weapon. All the crafted weapons are +1 but many of them gain really nice bonus effects, like onhit damage, keen or something like this. Check this link:

Perfect response. This is pretty much the information I was really after. I'm just gonna keep on huffing through and sell as much as I can. That gives me a conceptual blueprint for the rest and what I can sort of expect to maintain some semblance of viability throughout campaign. Thanks!
Well, there shouldn't be much huffing. Most first level enemies are pretty weak, as long as you have a henchman. So you will find enough cheap armor to last until you build up some gold to get to the big boys, just like any other rpg. Don't balk at any treasure, as even books will give you a lot of gold over time. Since quests don't have to be finished in any order, do the obviously easy ones first and save the hardest, like fighting the four swords (These swords are unbalanced achievement) for last, when you have some decent armor.
