Just a nitpick, but that would be because your computer case or the graphics card had defective cooling, not because the game didn't support Vsync.
A game running without Vsync or a frame cap will simply push the card for 100% power utilization, which it is rated for. Contrary to popular belief pushing a thousand frames a second doesn't damage your card, and wear and tear will only, in the long run, cause some solder to get loose (thermal cycling causing the board to deform), or some capacitor to fail, neither of which will lead to the card combusting.
