Well said. With the sales of this new NWN I think people are entitled to demand better graphics meaning updated textures and models.
I would normally agree but to be completely honest the new models I've seen so far feel like a downgrade. The new D&D art direction in games like Neverwinter and Warriors of Waterdeep has this childish and cartoony look with oversaturated colors and exaggerated proportions. Looking at Aribeth for example:
https://neverwintervault.org/project/nwnee/model/aribeth-hd-beamdog
Her belts and spiky shoulderplates got enlarged to Warcraft size and her face got stretched out to Buzz Lightyear proportions. I guess it'll look more like a 10 year old game than a 20 year old game but it's also not a look that will work well with the soundtrack or the themes in the campaigns or popular mods.
Part of the problem was Beamdog releasing those 2 new character models in the first place as many probably now expect the whole base game to be updated in a similar fashion with this long awaited renderer update even if some may not be a fan with the change in style. Other then those 2 models and the HD weapons none of the screenshots they have show have had any other updated models though so if this new renderer doesn't update the rest of the models then people will also question why it took so long to release this change as well.
In the end if this update does update all the models, Beamdog would be wise to have an option to check HD models or old school models so that way they would be able to make all players happy for those that like the new looks and those that want the original looks.
Haha, well, I actually like the new art style, except not that much of the WoW cartoony degree. But the face is good, makes NPC look like a human and not like a doll. Head is too big though I agree on that, but it should be easy to scale down. Good they did not go JRPG way, that would had been even worse.
I would be very happy to replay original content with new models and textures. But like someone said, they should keep old graphics as an option. Interestingly enough on Switch version of Dragon Quest XI you can chose to play with SNES style graphics. There are some other games too where you can chose retro graphics. It is modern to give choice between retro and current graphics.
Your default answer for anything regarding the PC version is "we are working on it" with no ETA, and in the same breath pushing console and android version hard on the PC based fourms.
Aesthetically i think Conan Exiles and Raid: Shadow Legends get the Western fantasy look right. Characters look competent and powerful and monsters look dangerous. Gameplay-wise they have their issues of course.
I agree, even though I wonder does men always have to be body building body type? I would prefer to chose less muscled char. Anyway, those are good examples of that how it is possible to make wonderful more realistic models and textures.
Trent just needs to throw us a bone with a little meat on it and most of us will shut up for awhile. A video of the progress, or a well written five hour module or something.
"Next time, I hope to have something interesting to share about the new Neverwinter Nights: Enhanced Edition Renderer!"
We hope to get it posted at the end of August.
