An regretting choosing wizard. I spend most of my time resting after every fight..usually by having to run all the way back through dungeons, so i can actually rest, which is pretty tedious or I just stand there and watch my companions kill stuff :/
Fighters are the least resource intensive, and other classes generally fall in between. But Clerics tend to be the most powerful out of the box and stay powerful throughout.
I am going to stick with the character tho'. I might do another class for a couple of levels to give me an alternative when the magic has run dry :)
There is also an override mod that would allow you to control your companions more closely (though you can directly posess your familiar and take control of it).
A PW sounds interesting, tho' I much prefer playing solo nowadays, mainly because my inability to commit to times.
Yes, summoning spells - very useful - thanks for that :)
My first time out with this game and am loving it now and I have NWN2 to play for the first time as well :)
I am now progressing well now with the pixie familiar, who is extremely useful and the cleric, who is making a surprisingly good tank
Just throwing it out there :).
And Last I checked, didn't the Intellect Devourer have Fire Resist? Ice & Acid did better. Also, Potions of Clarity will counter most of it's offensive spells, and See Invisible is handy (if your familiar is out, it has this ability).
And Lastly, I use Daelan Red Tiger as a comp for this. He hits harder than any of the others at this stage.
Drop by anytime, but if you give me a heads up, I can help you find your way around some starting areas. There is a REALLY good story line, or you can just go bash stuff.

As your levels increase you gain more disabling and defensive spells. Displacement gives them a 50% miss chance and it's only a lvl 3 spell. lvl 4 spells included stoneskin. Magic weapon and GMW will give you the best magic weapons for your level.
Stinking cloud, cloud of bewilderment, grease, web, low level summon etc are all great for CC or disabling archers and casters while you deal with the melee enemies.

Have fun :)
I play my RPGs very slowly and so have only reached level 6 so far. Incorporating the different approaches that have been suggested has made my Wizard simply terrifying already :D I am also being quite liberal with potions which helps a lot.
The melee mage build...that really tempted me to restart as it does sound fun. My current character has poimts in DEX, rather than STR, so I am switching between bow/crossbow depending on what ammo I have picked up. If anyone is curious (STR 8 - DEX 17 - CON 6 - INT 19 - WIS 8 - CHR 14)
Thank you @sknymick I may well give the WoA a try once I have finished the campaign as this seems to be the only game of this type that gives me replayability with different stories. As much as I love DA:O, I have played it to death.
One of the things I love about that game and this one is the control scheme...whole thing can be controlled from my mouse after setting up a custom button or three. Can't believe it has taken me so long to to play it!
