In original NWN 2 campaign, you start from low lever, and you even have quickly tutorial in form of harvest festival
Anyway basically, you will learn that completing these games is about knowing how to make either good melee fighting character or a good mage, buff party with the right spells, and that buying health potions is good
If you want play warlock, you should invest skill points in spellcraft and concentration, and either to make his/her charisma as high as possible, or a dexterity. And, picking a feat called "eldritch mastery" is a MUST have, if I remember right it's avaible on 21 level (so not in original campaign as level 20 is max there). Oh and picking up spell called "retributive invisibility" is important too

Keep in mind that warlock start to be really powerful in epic levels, so in Motb. Though it's a cool and interesting class and can do alot of damage, if opponents can't see invisible or/and don't have protection from acid energy - and in single player they will not have
Cleric and druid is also considered one of the most powerful classes to easily use, if you want to be good at casting but also be semi-capable in combat.
Cleric being the best healer, but you want to be careful with domain picks for what you want.
Druid being the better defender with protection spells, area damage spells, and a summoner with animal companion.
Wizard, Sorcerer, Bard, Rogue, Monk, all should be avoided if new until you have a much better grasp of the game. As your character will be in jeopardy a lot, you can't rely on other people to defend you and many of those classes also rely on being more tactical or careful with spells and abilities.
Theme-Wise Paladin is great, is a solid charisma for a social character, and can defend vs most stuff pretty well. Main downside being split abilities for not being as capable on strength.
My personal first run (NWN1) was Fighter, Bard, Red Dragon Disciple, which is a reliable strength longsword using character with a few immunities, ac, and attack/damage.
NWN 2 My main run was Favored Soul + Fighter + Rogue, variably in levels. I did it for heavy armor usage, feats like expertise, more spells and Favored Soul DR level 20 (although frankly Cleric is just better before it), and evasion from rogue, though sneak is always nice.
But that was 14 years ago.
Now I would still say Fighter is best, if you're new and want something reliable with no special abilities besides whatever feat you want to go down. (like whirlwind). Now the main downside of fighter is that you really want only 4 or 6 levels with them since they are lackluster after that.
Most people would probably suggest weapon master if you don't want anything too fancy and just be really good at one weapon. So that's a basic enough combination to go down that should be reliable, using potions to help bolster defenses when you need them situationally.
Alternatively your can exploit the crafting mechanics and go for a dual wielding character (stacking those +4d6 elemental damage bonuses on your weapons).
