(AKA, no. Animal companions are just weak per se and while caster summons have their uses, you would be better keeping levelling in the caster class to get a more powerful one than multiclassing for another. Ranger druid pets would be so ridiculously weak that they would have to be pets, by the fire, snuggling in your lap type pets ;)

I think it would be good if the game gave special abilities to Animal Companions to actually make them viable. Unfortunately a lot of stuff to do with them is hard-coded and very difficult to change via scripting.
