Absolutely correct. Here's the GOG vs, Steam difference (when it applies):
GOG= No DRM; Steam=DRM (Sometimes--if the developer wants it it is released on Steam because GOG does no DRM of any kind & won't allow it. I've got several Steam titles that have no DRM and for which Steam doesn't even have to be running to play them--Witcher 3, Pillars of Eternity and more--but lots of Steam games do in fact force DRM.)
NO DRM from GOG as well as the ownership privilege of owning your own installable copies of the games you buy--something Steam doesn't provide at all.
While the EE version has improvements on modern hardware, it's improvements make it have backward compatibility issues with a lot of high grade community content.
Also, beamdog is making two other bad decisions. First, bad workshop integration for the Aurora toolset (too many hoops). Second, they're biting the hand that feeds by trying to force steam users over to the beamdog forums by gimping this community. I hope they take this notice seriously, steam users are just going to get pissed off and move on.
Or should I post my concerns to the beamdog forums? :-\
Thanks. I was just gifted the GOG version of Neverwinter Nights Diamond recently and was looking for info on patches that I needed to use for that version.
This is my first time playing Neverwinter Nights and from the reviews I have read, if you are only planning to use mostly the single player component of the game, the GOG version is the one recommended. Hopefully I don't have any problems playing it on my Windows 10 PC.
I do have the enhanced versions of the other Beamdog D&D games, since I never had the originals anyways but I have supplemented that by adding Icewind Dale 2(no EE edition available) and Neverwinter Nights Diamond on GOG and eventually Neverwinter Nights 2 as well.
There were more potential issues too. I had a sticky summarising the myriad steps needed to fix potential issues on Bioboards which I had to copy to GOG because when their version launched I was answering the same problems as I had with 1.69. I stopped in the end because clearly GOG had no interest in fixing anything. Perhaps GOG finally did fix some of these things, but I doubt it, so if your GOG version "works flawlessly", consider yourself one of the lucky ones, don't go around calling people who do have issues "idiots". After all, you guys are the ones who bought 1.69 for a second time under a different name, no? I'm surprised you aren't on GOG boards flaming them for simply repackaging 1.69 for easy profit. Beamdog are using their profits to invest back into and improve the game. I know whch company is ripping us off and which one is trying to improve the NWN experience and by extension, which one deserves our money more.
Beamdog fills me with hope that NWN:EE will become the fixed patched improved version of this amazing game we all love. I can accept that if all you want to do is play the original camaigns and old Single Player modules then 1.69 and neverwintervault fulfill your needs atm (assuming you can get it to play nice or have it installed on an old computer). If you want Multi Player and new campaigns and updated old campaigns then you are going to have to move to EE at some point.
Personally I don't own EE yet mostly because I dont have time for another MP campaign. I am watching with interest tho and everything I see fills me with hope that when I tire of replaying Divinity:OS2 I will be able to introduce my MP friends to a vastly improved NWN experience.
Have fun :)
i just followed the steps from the reddit thread posted earlier and had no problems running it for campaign and expansion. it's pretty straightforward and not too complicated. also most of use got NWN:Diamond for free when they gave it away back then, DLC is complete if you just follow the guide and comes with the original soundtrack for free. the guide is for Windows 10 and not for old PCs i think.
so don't really feel a need for NWN:EE personally since i don't play multiplayer. had much fun with modules and mods back then but mostly just playing it for nostalgia today.
still waiting for Beamdog to restore EAX under OpenAL Soft before i buy it, but i doubt it's under their roadmap at all to convert it to EFX. i am really disappointed that Beamdog has to remove EAX options and support completely for all their remastered Interplay/Bioware titles. NWN:EE also still has a lot of issues at launch and still so it's more like an early access release.
Besides Neverwinter Nights EE is not quite a finished product yet, with the developers still making improvements to the game. If they add content to it in the future for the single player component of the campaign and solve all the issues that came with the original version, I might decide to get it as well in the future when it is on sale depending on whether I can reduce my massive backlog. Until then, I think I will stick with the GOG version for now.
When did they give it away for free? Bioware never did and no one else had the right to. There's no way Atari or WotSC would allow that anyway.
Have fun :)
So that is why I received the GOG NWN Diamond edition recently on a giveaway. My benefactor probably received it for free.
I don't think GOG hurt sales too much when they giveaway games either via GOG connect or through individual giveaways. It is good PR.
I personally tend to reward them when they do this. In fact I just bought nearly $40 in game recently during their summer sale, after adding 8 games via GoG connect, 2 games via giveways and 2 bonus games with my purchase.
it was free for a limited time back in Dec 2016 i think. so i guess many have managed to grab a DRM Free copy on gog which included the original soundtrack, PDF manual, artwork and map under Goodies.
for these who use old PCs like Pentium III - Pentium 4s running on Windows 98-XP for retro gaming, i think it might even work if you copied the NWN installation folder over, since no 3rd party client is required and you save time installing from CDs. i have the boxed copy, but surely installing from gog installer is much easier than opening the box lol.
at least the Diamond Edition is not removed from the GOG store unlike other Beamdog remasters, where you can no longer buy the original version of BG1/BG2/IW, you can only get it back if you buy their Enchanced version.
Of course I don't suggest GOG taking down Diamond edition from store, but the free giveaway coincided kinda unluckily.
GOG connect is out of the question of course, it means you've bought(or received more rarely) the game at least on Steam. At most it only hurts GOG, but few people would rebuy their games there, so that makes total sense.
Oh! Fair enough. I had no idea you meant GOG. Thanks for the info. :)
It certainly does work simply by copying the NWN folder from one machine to another. That's how I "install" it everytime I get a new computer.
Have fun :)
