Unable to join MULTIPLAYER: Attempting to recover your multiplayer Cdkey. Verifying purchase
Hello, I'm asking this problem on behalf of a friend (he just recently bought NWN:EE after being on the fence for a long time), and he cannot start up multiplayer. When he tries to, it gives him this message: "Unable to join MULTIPLAYER: Attempting to recover your multiplayer Cdkey. Verifying purchase"

We have tried looking into the issue and troubleshooting following similar threads, such as from:

-https://steamcommunity.com/app/704450/discussions/0/2561864094341869109/ (Someone else's post a month ago, no viewable solution seeming to have been reached)

-https://forums.beamdog.com/discussion/comment/975195/#Comment_975195 (Similar issue, no solutions listed worked)

-https://forums.beamdog.com/discussion/69968/cant-play-multiplayer-on-nwn-ee-steam (No visible solution to be found here either)

-The solutions we tried: searching in his USER/Documents/NeverwinterNights folder for a CDKey.ini file (none found), disabling firewall (didn't change result), restarting Steam to try again (no luck). He has never before had any version of Neverwinter Nights installed.

Is there a solution someone has found or that can be worked out? Best I can do on my end is to give his Steam profile; I don't think he wants to go through much effort to try and fix it, but I'd like to be able to play with him if possible :)

I am getting this to which is weird because I played around an hour ago and all was fine. My multiplayer list isn't refreshing and I can't join any servers

I went on one of the server forums and apparently its a widespread issue as of right now. Beam dog screwed something up

Very strange...I myself haven't been having any issues yet. Hopefully something appears soon!

Maybe crossplay upgrade with Wii on the backend? lol just spitballing lol. i just got this and can't log in lol damn cd keys
Try deleting (after making a backup of) your cdkey.ini file. NWN will automatically regenerate it when it starts back up.

There was no such .ini file in the first place on the friend's account
Then I would try the "Verify Files" function on Steam (I think that's what it's called, I don't use Steam)

My friend said he also did a full reinstall of the game, with the same issue occurring when he tries to launch Multiplayer - it's still not generating a CDKey.ini file :(
Dang... It only happens on the Steam copy..

I'm trying to think what else it could be... Where did you look for you .ini file? (just so that I know, as I don't have a Steam folder). There should be a folder full of binaries, and another folder full of configuration files and data.

He is looking under "C:/USER/Documents/NeverwinterNights," which is where it is on my own steam copy.
And there are other .ini files there? nwn.ini and {LINK REMOVED}

My friend had success with uninstalling and then deleting both directories (users/documents/Never.. and the steam/libraries/... Can't remember the exact number, but it's the one with nwnmain.exe)

I only know the common wisdom. Once you throw variables at me, like "your wisdom didn't work" I get kinda lost :)

I'll have him try deleting the others of the same .ini file extension, and see if that fixes anything for him. I'd try more myself, but it's his computer over an hour's drive away and he's not online right now to talk him through it. Best I can do myself is say what we have/haven't tried and what, if anything, has changed. Thank you for running through the options and variables, and helping us narrow it down, friend! :)

I am unable to generate a cdkey.ini at all after I click multiplayer. Seems to be a mass issue at the moment? dang.

Not long ago, Steam made a few changes to its file structures.

In your steam library, look for the section called tools.
Under that is the steam common redistributable files.
Right click that and go to properties then local files and verify that.

This issue is happening across several games and it may be the culprit, but not 100% sure yet.
Julius (quoted below) is one of the developers. He's suggested that creating an exception in your Anti-Virus for NWN will fix this.

Hello! Please try to run the game for the first time - it should create the key. If it doesn't create a key for you, then your Antivirus or UAC blocks changes to Documents - Neverwinter Nights.
