Best class for OC?
Hi, I'm new in NWN. (have experienced BG1, 2 & IWD 1)

What is the best class for Official Campaign? And I wonder if good to play solo or with colleagues?

Cleric, although it might be too easy (Cleric got a massive power boost from 2nd to 3rd edition D&D). As long as you don't play a dex-based melee character you should be fine with any pure classed character. Wizard or Sorcerer can be a little challenging to start with too unless you play them as buffed melee (either themselves or a summon).

The OCs are probably better solo, I mean they're not really designed with multiplayer in mind. There are a lot of really good multiplayer modules and persistent worlds out there if you want to play with friends.

Thank you for your advice. Colleagues I mean companion or familiar (NPC, party member). Sorry for my English. I heard NPC steals my EXP and worried about my level.

I believe the OC is best class of fighter/Bard. Designed class at least.

Best class is something like Fighter/Bard/RDD but RDD didn't become available until later expansions. and is rather excessively powerful.

the reason why I suggest fighter/Bard over cleric is because chapter 1, 2 and 3 have some minor quests that require arcane spell casting classes, so taking a level of bard will allow you to join the cloaktower in chapter 1 and craft in chapters 2 and three.

and the OC's randomized loot has checks to see if you have weapon focus when determining what do give you, so a fighter -type class is optimal.

Chapter 2 has a minor section I believe requiring a druid class you will not be able to use..... not sure if a Ranger/Bard would be able to manage it. but its not like wandering across the chapter for 5 tomes and bringing them back and using the tomes to craft and item.

as for the split of levels, 4 levels of fighter are needed to get weapon specialization. I used a two bladed sword, which got me a +3 weapon by level 9 which is rather strong. I'm sure other weapon choices are also valid, didn't want to use a shield. if you are using RDD class a two handed weapon is ideal because of your huge strength modifier.

3 levels of bard and preform of 9 allows you to have 3 bard songs per day that add +1 attack and +2 damage..

and RDD gets +2 strength at levels 2, 4 and at level 10 it gets +4 More strength. so a fighter 4, Bard 3 RDD 4 is getting +6 damage. good times.

"I heard NPC steals my EXP and worried about my level."

I used a companion for most of the Official Campaign. and in general. it reduces the XP gained from monster kills by 20% sure. but if you level up, you get less XP from monster kills so it evens out, also the game should spawn in more monsters to compensate for having a larger party.

I still finished the campaign at level 17 or 18. getting the last level almost at the end.

a Fighter 4 Bard 3 RDD 10.

I'd get some rogue levels in there. Partly because the rogue companion is incredibly annoying (ymmv) and partly because you only get one companion in the OC and someone has to do the plethora of traps and locked chests. So if you want to use other companions it is be a rogue or wander blindly into traps hoping your HP means you will survive, and spend half your time bashing chests. The classic fighter/rogue is a good first choice. Rogue on levels 2, 7, 12, 17 is optimal for bumping your skills.

Oh, tho if you like playing casters, the pixie familiar is an excellent rogue and solves that problem too.

Have fun :)

Yea all those locked items, that is a small gripe I have about the OC. Just about every single item you come across is locked. I spend more time waiting for the minion to open this that or the other than I need to. It really really slows down the game pace and its frankly boring after awhile. And the constant your weapon is ineffective blah blah blah. A club being ineffective....really?

its not an issue if you have a LOT of strength, didnt have any issue bashing my way thru things.

or if I ever did, I did have a rod of frost I used as an emergency lockpick and ranged weapon.

You get a rod of frost in the tutorial, and you can buy a second one from the mage shop in chapter 2. maybe there are more dunno.

I honestly used a piece of adamantite to make a weapon have fire damage (greatsword) in chapter 1 to cut thru chests if needed.

such a weapon gives 25 XP every time it hits a plague victim pyre so theres a good amount of free XP that way too.

Melee Wizard IMO is the best class for the OC and Expansions, particularly if you have HoTU spells available for the earlier campaigns. You get Improved Invis from Faerie Dragon at level 1 (switch for pixie at level 5, so you can lockpick stuff too), Flame Weapon and Ghostly Visage at level 3, and you can multiclass with 1 Fighter Level early for proficiencies. The AB for it falls off really hard by the late 20’s, but by that time HoTU is finished so it doesn’t really matter, lol.

But, it’s probably not the easiest character to play to begin with , as you kinda need to know intuitively the approximate duration of certain buffing spells (so that you don’t charge into combat with everything running out) , as well as what spells to pick.

I believe most people who want a melee wizard would opt for the cleric.

more Attack bonus.
More HP.
more armor
More proficencies
and can take domains to add spells.

the melee wizard's tenser transformation is a huge step back from the Baldur's gate tenser. you can't use your gear while tenser'd in this transformation.

whereas the cleric's divine power DOES allow you to use it with gear. and the cleric can buy proficencies or just take a level of fighter if it wants to use something else.

Cleric gets darkfire instead of flame weapon.
cleric gets stoneskin with magic Domain (or strength domain)
and improved invisibility with the trickery domain.

but otherwise its what people would do instead of a melee wizard.

Fighter is always the best classic class. (typically going down some prestigue class line like RDD)

It's simple, effective, and is the traditional go to.

However if you want the most powerful.. or the best for a mix of casting and combat, Cleric is great.

They are a lot more combat focused than in previous editions like BG1 or 2, since they can be relied upon fairly well for melee ontop of their spells.

As for wizard.. you have to know what you're doing if you're picking that class as there's a lot of ways to just die quickly.

Admittedly with how resting is in NWN you could do it fairly easily with all the spells you have.. though I think it feels less cheesy going fighter and not having to rely on resting for all your spells all of the time.

(wizard fighter is also better in BG than it is in NWN, given how your armor is more restricted on AC than in games like BG2, and your proficiency will be a lot off.. though you also have buffs so you could make it work).

In DnD the answer to that question is always cleric
red255 Jun 28, 2019 @ 7:14pm
In NWN2 I prefer the druid to the cleric actually. Nerfed Cleric a ton.

Divine favor caps at +3 instead of +5, Greater magic weapon and divine vestment are every 4 levels instead of every 3 levels. no darkfire. Heal only restores 150 HP.

in NWN1 I would cast Divine Favor for +5 attack +5 damage (magic) and then use power attack for -5 Attack +5 damage (physical) for a total of +10 damage.
wendigo211 Jun 28, 2019 @ 8:33pm
They did need a nerf though, Clerics are insane. However, NWN2 did add the Stormlord, Epic Divine Might and they had Divine Power add a BAB buff instead of an AB buff, which left more room in AB cap. They were still the strongest meleers (with Bards a close second).

Unfortunately, the changes to Divine Favor as well as the 1/2 caster level progression really hurt Paladins.
