Even though Half-Life looks and plays like a bland FPS game, it's a lot more than that. Half-Life tries not to force you into anything no cutscenes, no "failed" screen when you get caught in a place where you're supposed to be stealthy because of the billion enemies around you; instead of this, you just die.

The game gives you a lot of weapons and lets you do anything with them. You can try to play it like DOOM, but this will not work on normal and hard difficulty. You can lure enemies and use mines or bombs to kill them immediately, or you can use the crossbow to silently kill enemies. You can't finish the game with just one weapon. Trial and error is one of the game's strongest aspects. You need to solve some encounters like puzzles and beat them in the most efficient way to avoid running out of ammo or health for the next encounter.

Considering the age of the game, movement feels slippery and janky sometimes, parkour sections can be frustrating, but the option to save and load anytime you want makes it more bearable.

Storytelling can feel bad or lacking for gamers who are used to modern games that continuously try to show or remind you what’s happening around you in the most unnatural way, making you feel like some stupid kid with severe amnesia.

Half-Life is not like these games. Most of the time, you're clueless about what's happening around you, just like every other human and creature NPC in the game. Nobody is in this situation by choice they are all ordinary people. Every creature in the game is a pawn of someone else, like soldiers for the government and Xen creatures for the Nihilanth. Everyone is there because their employers put them there, even the most mysterious one, G-Man.

for a game that released in 1990s is still better than most newer unstable games, Came here from GTA V and Forza,NFS thinking I’d shoot bad guys and maybe hijack a car. Instead, I got a physics degree from Black Mesa, learned to stack boxes like a forklift driver, and used a crowbar more than any actual gun. No flashy cars, no RPG stats, no open world, just raw storytelling, tight design, and an unforgettable mute scientist who somehow survives alien invasions without saying a word. would panic in a ventilation shaft again.

If you want to see what I think about Half-Life, check out my Black Mesa review. Spoiler: I love it to death. Here, I review a mod called Field Intensity, which you can freely download on moddb. It's easy to install and Steam even recognises it in a janky way. You'll get a separate launcher for it in your library, but it behaves differently in some ways and counts playtime in Half-Life. At least it shows you that, but now I see that Steam's UI doesn't recognise these hours. I haven't played Half-Life on Steam since I overdosed on it before Steam was a thing, so there's that. Just so you know, my Field Intensity's playtime was 8.2 hours. Holy sh#t! Like a full game. Okay, maybe knock off an hour or two of me getting bogged down in an unrelated argument.

Robust and faithful, Field Intensity scratches the itch as no official expansion did. It's a bit like Opposing Force 2.0, given how you play as a marine once again and there's a light emphasis on jolly cooperation between you and other survivors. Escorting them can be a pain in the ass, but you know Half-Life's pathfinding is only slightly moronic, besides, it seems to be better here? People eventually get where they need to be and squad mates actually help, I give it that. I kinda liked that in Opposing Force, appreciated Blue Shift for its exploration... but this is the best of both worlds. For one, Xen doesn't suck... IT'S AWESOME! On par with Black Mesa's, only less drawn-out. The mod is so well-crafted that I had to remind myself I wasn't playing some secret release by Valve. Field Intensity is tryhard in the best sense of the word, delivering all that Half-Life had and more. Which mostly means dilapidated mega-bases full of winding corridors, colossal tunnels, and future tech that compose convincing yet simultaneously alien environments. Utterly atmospheric, at times horrifying. With great signposting, which is no small feat! The levels are gigantic but not confusing at all.

What I particularly adore is the remarkable encounter design and how it's portioned. Blue Shift and Opposing Force got it 50% wrong. Here, you get your ambushes, malicious combinations of enemies, all escalating in scale, which leads to serious tensions. Then you get a breathing room to absorb your surroundings and vacuum the loot for a minute - before everything blows up in your face again. I won't lie if I tell you that sometimes local fights surpass those of the original, while a variety of reskinned familiar faces and new abominable creatures make things feel fresh. As well as strategic due to the resource scarcity at play. The latter seemed unreasonable in early areas. As if someone responsible forgot ammo pickups were a thing. I even had to use melee for something other than crates a couple of times, which never happened to me in Half-Life. Then the issue fixed itself, so it doesn't count as a flaw. I say, the wacky voice acting and janky cutscenes are the only apparently "moddy" things about this wonder. Don't matter, for it's a cut above in all other aspects. It's a cute story, a violent adventure... But I can't eat that ass forever. Let's just hope this phenomenal work gets the recognition it deserves.

Half-Life is more than just a game, it is a legacy and a landmark in first person shooters. Say what you want about the Doom Marine or the Quake Ranger, but they are both rather inert individuals stuck in a perpetual state of bedlam that serves to satiate the most primitive part of the brain. Enter Gordon Freeman, a selective mute and slightly deranged scientist embarking on an extraplanar adventure to save the world from an alien threat as well as a government conspiracy, all while clobbering head crabs with a crowbar.

The excellent first person gameplay is set in a clandestine laboratory in a vaguely “The Mist” inspired military research facility, complete with a built-in tram for expedient transportation. On your way to unravel the mystery of the alien invaders you collect a rather extravagant arsenal of weapons that ranges from shotguns and guided rockets to alien bio-guns that shoot extraterrestrial wasps or little friendly snarks to perfect the mutilation of the opposition. The campaign is fantastic and holds up to this day, even if the later parts have some questionable areas that remain a challenge to those among us with perpetually bad timing..

I am aware that nothing I write will ever triumph over the legacy that this game carries on its broad and muscular shoulders, so I will just finish with a short conclusion.

Conclusion: Half-Life might have aged a bit graphically but it is still a fantastic game that has withstood the test of time, and you can’t help but admire the audacity of game whose main premise is that a nerd in a hazmat suit is outgunning heavily armed marines and alien shocktroopers..

Though very annoying at time (which is probably me being bad) it is generally i good game, the story is nice an easy to follow, puzzles are easy and the finally the npcs were ahead if its time, the mix of anguish yet humour throughout the game makes it very memorable.

Half-Life is a FPS that revolutionized storytelling and gameplay. Even years later still a must-play experience.

This game is a classic. Surprisingly it has aged really well. The story and gameplay are both really good. I highly recommend every gamer pick up this game.
