Change video resolution on Half-Life on Linux
The video resolution options shows only the native display resolution. But this is far too much for my old laptop. How can I set other values? I tried in hl.conf where I found the current values. But this file gets rewritten on HL-start, didn't work. Any help appreciated. Thanks!

Yeah, same as me with Linux Mint 14 XFCE 32 bit. Actually the game itself supposed to not to be that choppy. However, my out of dated, onboard Nvidia GeForce Go 7400 is not supported by the driver well. So, all I want to do is the run the game with 16-bit mode instead of default 32-bit. However, I cannot even change 1200:800 resolution. As I said before, the resolution and fullscreen are fine for me but I want at least have an opportunity to change the color quality into 16-bit. Any ideas?

In the video options changing the Display Mode to Normal from Widescreen gives me around 5 more resolutions to choose from.

Same problem here... However, even if in windowed mode, I cannot change the screen resolution. Any solutions?

Update:

If I use the cmd to set the resolution, everything works as expected, but I still cannot change the resolution inside the game.

I'm having no issues changing the resolution on the game, ubuntu 12.04 64b with AMD graphics, proprietary driver. I windowed, esc pause, and dragged/resized the window across as many monitors as I cared to, elsewise it would just snapto the first display (annoying when first of 6 displays is almost behind me). It needs a depth of field adjust for running across 3 or more displays.

I did have to tweak it to "widescreen" to get the 1920x1200 native for a single display. Anything more I have to window and resize for 2-6 display view.

Are you guys using it with Unity/Compiz on when running it? How well does that work? I usually disable compiz and run in metacity when gaming as it's far more stable. Make sure to define properly in ccsm your actual display and/or disable vblank in there if it acts up.

Hi there! I am also found that behavior strange. I am using HP630 laptop with Intel HD graphics and Linux MINT 14 XFCE installed. The only available resolution in Widescreen mode is 1280x720. Native resolution and many other are on the Normal list.

I have a Dual screen setup, And disable the second screen and reduce the resolution for playing games like TF2. I seem to be lucky for HL as it runs fine on one screen in my native dual screen desktop res (2560x1024).

Game mode is set with: (-s for single display)
disper -s -r 800x600

Desktop mode is set with: (-e for extended displays)
disper -e -r 1280x1024

And yes, The game res seems to be locked at the desktop res.
(Hence the use of disper to change res before & after playing)
