The way to fix it is to go to where you installed Half-Life, go into the 'Valve' folder, then find the userconfig.cfg file. Go to line that says r_wadtextures (at the bottom) and if it is set to "1", then type in a zero instead (with the quotation marks!). This will make it so that the error that is stopping you from playing the game stops happening.
The command is set by default for some people oddly. When it is set to 1 it is telling the game to load textures from .wad files, but Half-Life doesn't need to do this normally as the textures are in the map files. So, the game is looking for the .wad file to load the texture from, but it'll never be there.
