20th Anniversary VS Steam Legacy
As someone with no nostalgia for half life and who only first played it a couple of years ago, I want to find out which version people prefer. I do prefer the steam legacy version (accessible through a beta) but it way just be that I am used to it.
So, which version do you prefer?

I definitely prefer the new lighting settings, it's way more atmospheric.

PSA for anyone who's launched Half Life on their system before, it saves your old config file so you won't have the new lighting and gl_overbright by default.
I had to delete my config file from the install location, then run the game again and the new lighting is implemented and it's superb.
Only issue is your controls will be unbinded, so go to options and set default bindings, then open console command and write crosshair 1.

I honestly don't see what makes the 20th anniversary version that much better overall.
Improved grenade physics is nice, but I rarely use them for long distance stuff anyway.
I prefer the tiny UI over the big one since I'm not blind and I can still read everything fine while still having the actual game visible.
The bigger FOV is nice, but it's not that big a difference from the original's for it to be a game changer.
The crate dragging physics being fixed actually kind of sucks since now they're a slog to drag around.

Plus, there's a visual bug in Surface Tension for me where the water at the dam isn't murky for me when it should be.

I want to try this. Is it the file in the "\Half-Life\valve" folder?

Could you provide any examples of lighting changes?

had it installed prior & uninstalled, does it still have the old in that case?

Often when you uninstall game on Steam, some files remain on your drive. You would have to check if the Half Life folder was removed entirely after unintall to make sure.

The path to config.cfg is Half-Life\valve folder. Also you need to disable Steam Cloud save for HL, so you won't get the same old config re-downloaded.

LOL this is not new lighting. Half-Life had this ever since WON version.

No. The lighting did change. It was broken since the port to Steam. Among many other things.

To answer the OP:
25 Anniversary version, simply because it removed the need for numerous fanpatches.

I simply can't believe that it took YEARS for them to bring back the WON main menu... I mean, wtf?

I did this and it didn't seem to do anything? Including my controls staying binded

EDIT: turned off steam cloud and it worked, but now I can't connect to any multiplayer servers??? says "server not responding" for everything, no idea how to fix

EDIT 2: fixed by turning console "0.0" to console "1.000000", glad i thought to fetch the old cfg from recycle bin and check the differences

i honestly prefer the 25th aniversarry version of half life, the WON menu has much more personality than the steam version, they bundeled uplink with half life, added back deathmatch maps that werent in the steam version and created 4 new ones, updated the engine, officially added ivan and proto-barney as deathmatch playermodels and so much more

though all other goldsrc games are apparently broken but maybe valve will fix them eventually

the legacy steam version is now only for playing mods which is good and slightly annoying since you have to constantly switch from the current version to the legacy steam version

Yeah, probably it would be better if they provided 2 separate versions: legacy and 25th anniversary, so no switching would be requeried. Even for most files to be duplicated in both installs, the game weighs only 0,5GB, it's not much by todays standards.
