Half-Life 1 hype dies off… The game is dead.
Only yesterday online of Half-Life 1 was ranging from 25k to 30k active players all at the same time, now with the hype slowly, but surely fading away, game’s concurrent number of players dropped to about 17k at the time of writing, leaving Half-Life 1 at the brink of an uncertain future. This, unarguably, has a lot to do with the game’s old age as well as inferiority to other more modern titles such as Apex Legends and PUBG. These numbers for a game that’s supposed to stay a landmark of the industry for decades ahead are undoubtedly poor for a multiplayer title such as Half-Life 1. With the game’s graphics not being on par with more modern titles exceeding Half-Life 1’s outdated rendering techniques, graphical features that despite being updated as little as few days ago haven’t set the game to a noteworthy, up-to-standard condition, this confirms any possible suspicion that the game might not be good enough to be played extensively for the next few years. With the support that Valve had given to Half-Life 1, clearly in spite of pure laziness, trying to win back trust of a community with weak computers and low standards, there is still a mild glimmer of hope that the game would still be played by people who have been left behind on the trends of the industry. This might be it for Half-Life 1, statistics show that the game’s popularity is heading downward and very likely, will still continue it’s path into abyss of yet another failed title, especially considering game’s aged gameplay and approach to a nearly non-existent narrative. The game is simply not good enough to be played and is simply dead in it’s current state, leaving very little incentive to be played by modern players or to be covered by the pinnacle of the gaming community – Fortnite livestreamers. There is not much left to be said other than the game dead. It is time to move on.

UPDATE (20th November, 2023)
Half-Life 1's player number dropped to about 10k on Monday. This does confirm many initial suspicions.

Sub-update: It is important to track the number of players. With the 25th Anniversary giveaway now coming to a halt, there are observations to be made to evaluate the critical uncertainty of the situation, where the game might end up in the near future. With a lack of updates, the only remedy for the game's player count would be if the modders themselves take matters into their own hands, it is, however, not a reliable solution to the ongoing online crisis.

UPDATE (21st November, 2023)
A significant drop in player numbers has hit Half-Life 1. Analyzing Steam charts we'll see that yesterday's peak online of 25k players is unmatched by a significant drop to 14-15k. That trend might continue down the line after the Autumn Sale ends.

UPDATE (23rd November, 2023)
Player number was at it's lowest today since the giveaway Valve conducted few days ago. The number dropped to about 7k-8k which was much more severe than expected previously. The today's Half-Life 1's performance is poor, apparently due to a certain malfunction the new update had caused. Almost as if developers themselves are done with the game getting too much recognition for it's own good and are just trying to shake people off, but that's not the best assumption to make right now. What is, however, tragic for the game itself, is that such heavy miscalculations on Valve's part would harm the reputation and online of the game permanently. Whether the player count would recalibrate or stay at it's current lows is only a matter of speculation until we get more data in the days to come.

People can dislike a game but to hate on it because of graphics because they're not as good as fartnite is dumb.

the game lacks any significant update, it is a nice lagless engine update but so far i see no difference mainly gameplay is still the same, no checkpoint or autosave system, you still rely on vague checkpoints that most of the time are same end to end of the map, no stuff like nav points or path tracing to next goal even though maps are linear, maps are still i mean still not seamlessly loading in background (q1 graphics basically still is loading on map change), no upgrade system of any kind, no new maps or content, lots of bugs (linux water, z sifghting, no new graphics effects - was hoping for reflective water at least in this day and age as an option), one good thing valve promised to keep updating so thats a start, hope it takes not too long to make most of new updates to at least fix bugs and hopefully make the game on part with source version at least in graphics (shadows/water/physics in goldsource finally?), lots of stuff missing or still to do, but again at least a nice update start, never been in decades almost. also hl1 engine could be a fun mod making platform if new better tools like snapmap or ingame editor for new maps with workshop, a lot of things could be done reeally to make hl1 relevant today, much more potential due to low gfx/faster dev cycle, easier update, anyways hopefully at least some updates could be done.
The main reason why game is hyped up not because of the update.
Because it was free.

Half-Life 1 has never become free before and people added that to their library and lived the good old times. Of course the hype going to die in time, this is a game from 1998 and not everyone would play it 24/7.

However, 17k was the general playercount for a while now.
30k depending on the time.

Ngl, for a game from 1998 I'm actually suprısed THAT MANY PEOPLE played this game and I don't care if the hype is dying. I'm happy it happend and lasted for a while so we could enjoy it.
