There are certain spots where you have to engage harcore but you'll know before you get there. The rest of the game is a beautiful tour of the new(er) source engine. Great dialog and story too.
It's a good tech demo.
I won't call it bad, but I prefer 1 to 2. If given the choice to play either, I would always pick 1.
Some people say 1 is better, some say 2 is better. Both games are great regardless which you think is better. Half Life 2 continues the story of the first game and it did so very well.
Not better for me, 1 has simply better atmosphere but it's still a good game that's worth playing, if you're Half-life fan, a must.
Id say equal to hl1 in its own way, still one of the most well designed single player fps campaigns ever, if a bit easy if youre a genre veteran
Yes, it is. I prefer the first but the sequel is still worth it.

I'm aware what you are actively trying to imply with this kind of sentence yet I'd still argue that not only "tech demo" shouldn't be a pejorative thing yet said game isn't just a tech demo since it's still a fully fledged FPS with several chapters, many weapons and many different gameplay mechanics through said game rather than just a few levels. Lost Coast is the actual technical demo level for the Source Engine.

We could qualify the first Portal game as a tech demo since it's short yet Narbacular Drop, its spiritual predecessor would qualify more as such. I can get some people seeing Half-Life Alyx as Valve's ground for VR yet there was one set in the Portal universe before.

I'd even dare that Doom could be qualified as Carmack flexing on his programing skill that goes beyond what we used to get or Quake to show how a full 3D game on PC could work (even the flames are 3D when it's not needed) or even DKC for using the Silicon Graphics computers to portray pre-rendered 3D models which are still looking impressive on the SNES.

Tl;Dr It's not a technical demo but a full game using an advanced engine in a smart.

Disagree.

Disagree.
and would you mind explaining why you disagree?

i always hate it when people call hl2 a "tech demo". even if it did show off a lot of things in source, it's still does really good in a lot of aspects (story, gameplay, etc), even to this day.

No.
If you're on the fence about HL2 then try the mission they removed from the game and made it its own walkthrough of the technology used (with interactive dialog balloons) called The Lost Coast which I believe is free. Given all the technological innovations HL brought when it was made, HL2 blows the doors off it. If you want to continue the story of Gordon Freeman then by all means give HL2 a chance.

Edit: Strangely Lost Coast was marked in such a way so that it will not come up in a search. Hopefully this link directly to the store page works for you.
its unlisted, wanted to try it out
kushiwa, wait for the summer sale, valve games will be on sale :)
if you ask me,its kinda hard to decide between HL1 and 2,HL1 has Xen and all but I love HL2 for its gravity gun and combine is cool

No.

Since you don't mind, you replied "No" to the question, what is your reason for calling it a tech demo, please?
