Report a translation problem
I have complied this list to help resovle most of the problems common to new steam / valve gamers in hope it will be of use.
This is to help people who have off sized or black screen when starting the game.
This will allow you to see the games menu options to correct the problem.
Use the game launch options.
1 Click Library in Steam
2 Righr click the Half-Life game
3 Next select properties
4 Click the box "set launch options"
5 Then enter the command "-norm -windowed -w 800 -h 600" no quote marks
6 Click ok
---
from : UndeadScottsman
"-w <width> - Forces the engine to start with resolution set to <width>.
-h <height> - Forces the engine to start with resolution set to <height>. This launch option does not need to be set in the presence of -w. The width value with determine the height automatically."
standard height size is determined by the screen mode -norm or -widescreem
---
Correct your screen resolution in game menu options
1 Start the Half-Life game
2 On the game menu page select option
3 Then click video tab at the top
4 Select the correct mode and resolution for your monitor
5 Click apply
Once you have the correct screen mode and resolution selected.
You will need/should remove the commands in the Half-Life launch options.
Good luck and happy gaming.
P.S
Here are more "set launch options" commands that can be used for video.
-fullscreen : no framed window
-windowed : game will be in a framed window
-gl : open_gl graphics rendering
-software : CPU graphic rendering
-normal : monitor size 4:3 ratio
-wide : monitor size 16:9or10 ratio
-gl_vsync 0 : turns off verical Synch in open_gl rendering (can improve FPS)
-nofbo : this turns off some advance rendering in open_gl (can improve FPS)
-nomsaa : turns off AA ;Anti-Aliasing (can improve FPS)
-w 800 : width screen resolution size (other sizes can be used)
-h 600 : height screen resolution size (other sizes can be used)
--------------------------------------
Note : 1
When running open_gl rendering mode
These commands can be left in the command-line "set launch options" if they help increase your in game FPS.
-gl_vsync 0
-nofbo
-nomsaa
or use all three at once "-gl_vsync 0 -nofbo -nomsaa" no quote marks
If you have intel graphics it does not support Open_gl dirvers very well at all.
The big cross-platform update in 2013 is when they removed the D3D grapghics rendering from Half-Life. Intel is designed to run D3D (directX)
--------------------------------------
Note : 2
In the game options menu, under the video tab.
Selecting widescreen will show differant screen resolution sizes.
--------------------------------------
Note : 3
From [spI]
"For the record, to get the exact same vertical viewing area (but extra on the sides) as a 4:3 monitor using 90 FOV, on a 16:9 monitor you would set the FOV to 106.26.Any higher than that and you have extra viewing area on the top and bottom as well"
-norm = 4:3 ratio = default_fov 90
-wide = 16:9 ratio = default_fov 106.26
default_fov 90 or default_fov 106.26
Can be typed in the game console or put in the userconfig.cfg file.
--------------------------------------
Note : 4
Do not forget about "sizedown" and "sizeup" keyboard controls.
When you first install Half-Life the "sizeup" does not have a key bind for it.
bind "-" "sizedown"
bind "=" "sizeup"
Can be typed in the game console or put in the userconfig.cfg file.
--------------------------------------
Note : 5
For older equipment
Low FPS in differant places within a map.
I have seen problems like this years ago, It had to do with dynamic lighting
It can be turned on and off. Add this cvar to your userconfig.cfg 0=off 1=on
r_dynamic "0"
