Correct me if I'm wrong but Blue shift and Opposing Force, are like standalone expansions, thus Half life is not needed to run them.
Also, Half Life source adds chapter selection, which the original Half-Life lacks.
Still the MP community and the mods should make you buy the original version indeed.
half life-source have better graphics indeed, i just got the game for replay the game in source
the steam version doesnt even have D3D api only opengl and software left.(on D3D looked the best the game)
but if you want opposing force, MP and mods buy the original
Half-life source can give you better single player experience
then steam version is different :) good to hear
the original cd release is not standalone, it needs the basic half life for sure
Originally Opposing Force needed Half-Life to run because it was an oficial expansion while Blue ♥♥♥♥♥ was a second official standalone game.
However, if you want to play the third official expansion Half-Life: Decay by using the PC fan made port, you will need Half life to run it.
If you like the saga, source can be considered by paying some cents when it is with a disccount. But never the full price. It doesn't deserve such money. Not in it's actual shape.
Otherwise, just play Black Mesa (Half-Life remake - no Xen for now...... but SOON!!!!) if you want to play on the Source Engine.
Your call...
