It's model name is barney, so everyone calls them barneys. If it were something like "guard" everyone would call them guards. They were called barneys even before HL2 invented the character.

maybe they were thinking renaming b calhoun from blue shift
into barney calhoun from HL2 because of it

Forget about HL2, Blue Shift and anything other than HL1. They were titled barney's by the devs, it's not connected to anything related to sequels or expansions.

A man in Half-Life 2, the one who calls himself Barney, says: "About that beer i owe ya..."

So, I think the actual Barney is one of them security officers in Half-Life, but you never know who the actual Barney is, because they all have the same appearances, and they all want to buy you beer.

One of them officers must be Barney, or perhaps they are clones, and they're all Barney.
