This is to help people who have off sized or black screen when starting the game.
This will allow you to see the games menu options to correct the problem.

Use the game launch options.
1 Click Library in Steam
2 Righr click the Half-Life game
3 Next select properties
4 Click the box "set launch options"
5 Then enter the command "-norm -windowed -w 800" no quote marks
6 Click ok

---
Correct your screen resolution in game menu options
1 Start the Half-Life game
2 On the game menu page select option
3 Then click video tab at the top
4 Select the correct mode and resolution for your monitor
5 Click apply

Once you have the correct screen mode and resolution selected.
You will need/should remove the commands in the Half-Life launch options.

Good luck and happy gaming.
---
Note:
-w <width> - Forces the engine to start with resolution set to <width>.
-h <height> - Forces the engine to start with resolution set to <height>. This launch option does not need to be set in the presence of -w. The width value will determine the height automatically.

standard height size is determined by the screen mode -norm or -widescreem
----
P.S
Here are more "set launch options" commands that can be used for video.
-fullscreen : : no framed window
-windowed : game will be in a framed window
-noboarder : in windowed mode this removes the frame around it.
-gl : open_gl graphics rendering
-software or -sw : CPU graphic rendering
-normal : monitor size 4:3 ratio
-wide : monitor size 16:9or10 ratio
+gl_vsync 0 : turns off verical Synch in open_gl rendering (can improve FPS)
-nofbo : this turns off some advance rendering in open_gl (can improve FPS)
-nomsaa : turns off AA ;Anti-Aliasing (can improve FPS)
-gl_aniso 0 : Removes anisotrophic filtering (can improve FPS)
-w 800 : width screen resolution size (other sizes can be used)
-h 600 : height screen resolution size (other sizes can be used)

--------------------------------------

Note :
Do not forget about "sizedown" and "sizeup" keyboard controls.
When you first install Half-Life the "sizeup" does not have a key bind for it.
bind "-" "sizedown"
bind "=" "sizeup"

Can be typed in the game console or put in the userconfig.cfg file.

Hi -=GOz=-Blyte,

thanks for your kind help. I think, I described my problem in the wrong way. Your Solution does not bring success. Black screen or off sized is not the Problem. I can see the full screen and the menu background, but noch menu options.
I have made a screenshot, what I can see:

Do you have a C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\Half-Life\valve\resource\gamemenu.res file?
Bezzera83 Oct 19, 2015 @ 10:00am
Downloading missing or corrupt files did not fix the problem.

I use MacOS, there is no path like this you posted. But I found the file gamemenu.res in the game directory on my mac. Can I do something with this?
Blyte Oct 21, 2015 @ 12:11pm
Not much you can do with the res file. Making sure you had one. Checking the integrity of the game cache is all I can offer for help with your system.

Ok, the Problem is solved nin natural way. In the meantime I installed the Demo of Half Life 2 and played it. Then, when I started Half Life 1 again, the menu options are visible. Strange thing, but it works now.

Thanks for your help!
