Half-Life

Half-Life

Could not generate new save game file
A assertion failed message told me exactly that every time I click save game, when I click either Abort or Retry the game closes and when I click Ignore I can save with no issue, what’s going on?

My problem was that I saved too many times in which it breaks after the 1000th time, and the solution was to remove the older save (.sav) files in the locally stored SAVE folder. I was able to access them on my pc in C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Half-Life\valve\SAVE, but the location might be different for you if you use another OS. The ones with a lower number (Half-Life-035.sav) are older saves and moving them to a newly-made folder worked for me, with the latest save resetting to Half-Life-000.sav.

I assume this is due to a naming conflict in the folder where it tries to reset to 0 but cannot properly save it due to another saved with the same name, so even deleting the older .sav files would probably work. I also think the ignore and save method stores your save into error.sav, since I couldn't access any other error saves apart from my latest. If you want to be extra precise in your saves, you might want to compare the file times to the save times in the Half Life game.

Hope this helps and can be of good reference!
