Fall damage in HL1 is B.S. (in my opinion)
idk but its just so horrible and annoying for ME;
HL1 makes it feel like "oh u shjump off SHORT distance??? well zis a *"minor fracture, -DETECTED"* for ur legs!!!:steamsalty:"
in my opinion HL2's fall damage is more tolerable for me,
unless if its Gold Src's and Source's map scaling that makes height of platforms seem either bigger or smaller.
its almost as if you can FEEL the pain of Gordon's ankles breaking
(or any gearbox expansions character's ankles for that matter)

fall damge in hl1 is pretty hard, but i like it... why i like it? simple, because it feels important, fall damage in hl2 is a thing you don't really think about it so much, but i hl1 fall damage feels like something you actually want to think about it, and it makes the game more complete, idk why but i really like this mechanic in hl1...

makes sense, its like: DONT DO THAT YOU DUMB*SS YOU ARE GOING TO DIE! almost the same as DONT PUT A TOASTER IN THE BATHTUB YOU DUMBF**K YOU ARE GOING TO KILL YOUR SELF!
i think i just hate the shock value of it that makes me FALL OVER in my chair IRL

one example of why fall damage is good is: in blast pit chapter, there is an elevator that falls into toxic waste, but you can just skip it and go into the ladder, but when you go up the ladder is too high fo the platform, so you needed to call the elevator to fall there and then on the platform, if you did not, you take some damage from falling... so the fall damage actually add puzzles to the game...

im trying to calculate what you just said, do u have a video of it? i cant remember my gameplay off the top o' my head.
go to minute 15:00, you see that he climb a ladder and then it has to fall down, if he calls the elevator and not let that fall, he would've had a middle platform to fall down (the top of the elevator) without taking damage

It's fine but I don't like how it made me feel like wanna reload a previous quicksave because avoiding that fall was simple and I should have avoided it.
