You need the original retail version of Half-Life (which might not be available in your country). The mod version is not compatible with the Steam version. The mod version is a hassle because you have to install the retail version of Half-Life first then update it and then you can install the mod version which only goes up to version 1.5 and after all that you're stuck with a game you cannot really play online anymore because the servers are long gone. It does have a LAN option but the won version of Half-Life only allows one client per CD key and you need more than one computer on the same network running the same exact game. Honestly, I stick with the Steam version because it's really "it just works" and that's it kind of thing. There is a retail version of Counter-Strike that's much easier to install as that one doesn't require Half-Life to be installed and includes some extra games bundled with it but you run into much of the same problems as the mod version.

The nice thing about the Stream version over all other versions out there, is that it just works and that's important in a multiplayer online video game.
