Welcome to Steam, enjoy your stay.

What did you expect? Half-Life 2, the game that launched Steam nearly 20 years ago, also had DRM. It's kind of Steam's thing.

No, HL2 doesn't have drm. It can be launched and player with Steam closed.

That is interesting to learn, that HL2 no longer requires Steam to be open. However, HL2's original release on physical media required creating and logging into your Steam account. The physical install also required you download a portion of the game for "decryption" purposes. The physical box was basically just a glorified CD key to activate Steam with.

HL2 and Steam's coinciding launch began Steam's reputation as a DRM platform. Most of the games I have on Steam, including other classic games from the 90s that originally never had DRM, now require a Steam login.

Steam's DRM throughout the years was so common that GOG established their own distribution platform on the reputation of NOT having DRM.

It is to be expected from Steam.

Buy the WON version (physical CD-ROM). You'll only need to enter a valid key after installing on first launch just once (which should be included with the disc anyway), there's no limit to how many times you can install it either but every fresh install will require that you re-enter a valid key. Zero online activation is required.

Pretty sure all of the official Valve games that came out before Portal 2 either have or at some point had DRM, kinda par for the course with Valve and Steam in general.

I bought Half-Life 2 off the shelf back in the day and didn't even know it had DRM. Oddly enough I never had any problems with it, either.

As many games as I've played with some type of DRM installed I've yet to suffer any issues with them.

It will ALWAYS lead me to believe that the only reason people really want it out of games is to pirate them.

am I dumb for not knowing what a DRM is or rather what it means in this context

DRM, that arent the ownership when you buying like this one example. And that over 25 Year old game should be DRM free...

Digital Rights Management. Any anti-piracy measure can be said to be a form of DRM, even those CD keys you used to have to enter when you installed the game way back when.
