Half-Life

Who is Gman?
If you've played Half-Life, you probably know Gman. In case you forgot, he is the character who constantly follows you throughout the game, though you can only see him if you pay attention to the environment. Gman is also present in Half-Life 2 and its episodes. Despite his big prominence in the Half-Life series, I know very little of him. I tried looking some information up on the web, but I was only left with more questions. I have so many questions for this enigmatic character. Like, what are his motivations for "hiring" Gordon Freeman? Where did he get his powers from? Was he responsible for the resonance cascade? Is he a good guy or a villain? And are other characters aware of his existence?

It was never revealed who he is or what was his motivations. He's (and his "employers") been playing with all sides.

I think he's just a metaphor for "the man" honestly. And going by how he is so nonchalant about discussing the resonance cascade disaster, he might represent man's greed for nuclear power/technology. You know "all in a day's work" type stuff.
In HL2 it shows the alien/combine presence has greatly changed the world. I think that's enough of a clue to what the gman was trying to accomplish in 1, using you and the science team to open a portal for Xen for......whatever reason...to spell it out obvious would ruin the magic and mystery. It's better left open IMO

If I had to hazard a guess, I have to assume he works for a group that wishes to destabilize the Combine's rule over multiple dimensions. He has the ability to foresee multiple outcomes and manipulate time to a certain degree, but probably uses outside assets to put a layer between his benefactors and their target. Mark's written ending for ep3 has the borealis careening towards the Combine's home world with Gordon at the helm. Whether that was Gman's end goal or not though, I'm not sure.

A) A transdimentional alien
B) Gordon Freeman from the future
C) The illuminati or the FBI/CIA's representent
D) Gaben's great great grandson to tell he'll make Half Life 3
E) All of the above.

Replaying this after so many years, I'm surprised at just how many times you see him in just the first few chapters.

Smoking man from X-files.

The Wiki says he is an "Inter Dimensional Bureaucrat".

From watching the 25 Anniversary Docu on Youtube I learned that Gabe wanted the "Cigarette smoking man" from X-Files in the game.

To be honest. If Valve ever 100% reveals what he is then I think we are at the final Half-Life game ever, or at least at the final Canon main storyline game, spinoffs are always possible.

His purpose is to make players speculate and to make it easier for the Devs to change up things if needed. The moment they demystify him, his story will be less interesting.

This is what I think they are/were planning for the G-man. The term originally came from government man so he could be some professional agent from a mysterious bureau/agency who is expecting and prepared for the resonance cascade.

Off course, that's just his placeholder name, and valve can easily change his origins and make him an alien or some conquering officer from another galaxy. For some reason, Grand Admiral Thrawn from Star wars Rebels reminds me of him.

The wiki may not be fully trustable since we still have no confirmations about many things.

I need to rewatch the Xfiles since it is so much in the mood of the era.

But wasn't there a similar character in the Twin Peaks and Farscape (and even Star Trek)?

I hope Valve won't reveal everything because it may just ruin the character.

That'd be very subversive if the Gman ends up still being a mere human (although it's unlikely because of HL² and the Episodes + Alyx).

Gman is Gordon's dad who hates him. Gman kicked Gordon out of the house and forced him to get a job at Black Mesa because Gordon is a loser. At the end of the game he puts Gordon in time out because he was very bad.
