Controller support for Half-Life Mods and Opposing force

So I have tried messing around with valves default steam input commands for a xbox controller, any game or mod I launch works fine with all button inputs except for one thing....the left joystick axis refuses to work unles I basically make it emulate WASD. Has anyone figured out how to allow these games to use joystick axis input for movement ? Honestly seems like a missed opportunity to play half life on the couch on the big screen and chill out beating up aliens and such :3 ?
