Half-Life

to anyone who accidentally set their resolution too low and now the game's ui is super zoomed in,
go into the game's launch options, and put

-w [your displays resolution width] -h [your displays resolution height]

for example, on a 1080p monitor it'd be -w 1920 -h 1080,

on a 1440p screen it'd be -w 2560 -h 1440

if you're using a 4k display it'd be -w 3840 -h 2160

and on the steam deck it'd be -w 1280 -h 800

why this isnt pinned with the amount of people having this issue is beyond me

What would be even better is if Valve would fix the issue.

I agree, I don't know why a resolution as low as 320 x 200 is even supported in the first place when it makes the game unplayable.

People need to stop setting their resolutions so low

Some people don't even know what resolution or aspect ratio even means and just set it to widescreen without thinking because their display is widescreen and that's all they know. And you can't blame them, some people aren't tech-smart and just want to play the video game.

It's Valve's fault for even allowing such a stupidly low resolution in the first place when it's literally unplayable. It's even more mind-boggling why 320 x 200 is the default when you choose widescreen. There's no excuse for Valve not to fix it.

Don't act like this is the people's fault.

The intended audience wouldn't read it anyway because the sort of people that run into this particular issue aren't smart enough to do a simple Google search for the hundreds upon hundreds of threads that have been made about it already, and will then make an additional thread about it.

It's so bad that you could make a drinking game out of it. Take a shot for every time someone makes a new thread complaining about a blown-up menu in HL.

It sounds like a holdover from the retail version where installing HL fresh would set the lowest resolution available.

320x200 happens to be the native resolution of DOS and DOS programs, and since Half Life came out when 95 and 98 were still mainstream, I would expect it to be hardcoded in.
It's weird though because I don't get options lower than 480p[i.imgur.com]. I don't know how other people are getting it lower than that.

I figured it was a leftover from the retail version, but I mean, they completely redid the UI for the Steam version, they released patches to fix bugs up to 2019, they took measures to update the game for modern hardware, it just seems weird to me that they wouldn't just have the game default to a higher widescreen resolution considering how many people are having this issue. About getting a lower resolution, you need to set the game from "normal" to "widescreen". The lowest "normal" resolution in the game is 480p and in widescreen it's 200p.

Edit: Nevermind, just checked and now the lowest resolution I have is 720 x 480? So does the 320 x 200 resolution ONLY appear when changing it from normal to widescreen for the first time? Did they like, TRY to remove it or something? I am very confused.

Also "The intended audience wouldn't read it anyway because the sort of people that run into this particular issue aren't smart enough to do a simple Google search"? If they pinned a thread with the title "IF YOUR MENU IS ZOOMED IN, HERE'S HOW TO FIX IT" you REALLY don't think people would click on it, especially considering they'd see it because they're already there to make a thread about it like you said? Listen, people on Steam discussions can be....not the brightest, but give them more credit then that.

Anyway, I don't want to sit here and argue,
tldr valve shouldve fixed it by now and dont be rude to people for having this issue and asking for help

Cuando entro a la pantalla de inicio aparece "con zoom" y si eso es lo que describes antes, entonces, ¿qué botones presiono para cambiar mi resolución? / When I enter the home screen it appears "zoomed" and if that's what you describe before, then what buttons do I press to change my resolution? ((This happens to me in Classic Half-Life))

The instructions to fix this issue are outlined in the post.

You don't go into the game, it's in the game's properties, in Steam. Look up how to edit a game's launch options in Steam if you're confused.

Now I can play, thank you very much!
(I configured the game in the properties section with "-w 1024")

You need to specify a height value too. I.E. -h 768.

Wait, are you still on a 1024 x 768 monitor in 2023? That's sick.

Somehow I was able to play, I hope that not configuring that complicates something; And about the resolution, I put that to be able to enter the home screen, then I adjusted it with a widescreen of 1240 x 1024
