Are there any underwater monsters?
Hi. First-time HL player here. I've progressed past Blast Pit so far. I've noticed that the game is way scarier than I expected. Nothing's been too much for me thus far, but I have a fear of deep water and large underwater creatures and was wondering if there's anything in that general category coming up.

I'm enjoying the game a lot so far but this is the only thing that worries me.

The second and third shark are on the same chapter but you can skip them as they are in the deep water that you don't need to go in. Basically, it's a jumping puzzle and if you fall, you gotta swim with da 2 fishes as penalty.

The fourth is less scary than the first as you can easily hide at the corner of the lake, peak your head in and shoot at the fish before it bites you, backpedal out, repeat. It's a tedious process to kill it but that's how I manage without going in and face the monster. The biggest threat at this section is basically the apache shooting you while you're fighting the monster.

The fifth can totally be skipped as it's only swimming at an area you don't need to go. The sixth can also be skipped if you're good at avoiding being hit by a portal that teleports you to the room with that creature.

The leeches appear a lot but they are more annoying than an actual threat.

As for opposing force, you gotta swim through a few more of these big fish aliens on one chapter only but in my experience, they are less of a threat here. The Black Mesa game (remake of Half-life) has lots of these alien sharks in the later chapters (the reason why I noclip cheated on that game and made me lost interest, yeah they scare me too).

Yes, there are such monsters, but the game shows you these, you will not encounter anything unexpected in an unlikely place.

Thanks for the quick response. My fear is mainly about eels and large fish. What chapters are the underwater monsters at, what do they look like, how big are they, and what context are they in? This is also why I haven't been able to complete Dark Souls, as the Hydra(s) terrify me.

Followup question: are there similar monsters in Blue Shift, Opposing Force, or Half-Life 2?

The Ichthyosaur they call. You won't meet it except in certain places, so don't worry about it. Where you will encounter it, the game shows you from outside the water and it is not difficult to kill. So don't worry.

Okay. I've googled it and it's not massively scary. I think I can probably handle it. Does it chase you underwater at any point?

Yes but you kill it with a few arrows.

Wow thanks. I'm not sure I can deal with that. Would I be missing out on much if I noclipped through the fight? Apologies for so many followup questions

There's total of 6 alien sharks. There are also leeches which you first encounter at the Blast pit chapter.

Following up, there are water enemies on Opposing Force, but not on Blue Shift.

In Half Life 2, on the beggining, there a secuence where you are in a brieft moment on water and a monster like the one of Half Life 1 try to attack you. But it's a fast escape and after that there zero water enemies. Only a section with a boat but you can't swim.

you would not miss much if you do not mind noclipping.

if that can help you, you can also imagine the shark is some weird motorbike on crack. that's what i imagine when hearing the thing.

Thanks for the replies everyone, I'm really grateful. I'll get back to playing the game. Worst case scenario I can just stop playing. Would be great if there was a mod that removed/changed the underwater encounters but for now I can just noclip if it gets too much.

Thanks again :lunar2019piginablanket: I know how toxic the Steam community can get so I'm really grateful for how helpful you guys have been
