Why did they remove friendly fire in half life 2
Yes, I know there are major allies that can't be killed without breaking the game, but what about minor allies (rebels and all that)?

Because they forgot that, in Half-Life, the other people you met were either help or hindrance, and for the most part you had to make the decision yourself. Should I have this guy follow me so I have some backup, or kill him because I'd rather have his ammo? It was an elucidation of the realities of disaster/survival scenarios; that cooperation is almost purely utilitarian and evokes some of the darker aspects of human behavior. It also made you feel powerless in that a lot of situations you can't save them even if you want to. This alone elevated the game to survival horror in my opinion, it never felt like just an action shooter to me

Half-Life 2 decided to make Gordon Freeman a savior that everyone worships and follows around whether you want them to or not. Seriously, they won't leave me alone. So annoying. Plus if you killed Alyx or Barney or whoever you'd miss out on all that sweet facial animation they put so much effort into. HL2 missed all the points that the first game made to show off new tech. Which is fine, HL was a tech demo too, buf if you're gonna do such drastic changes to the tone and plot you may as well make a different game. 16 years in retrospect, HL2 really doesnt feel like a Half Life game to me. It feels like Valve wanted to make a different IP but felt it wouldnt sell without the Half Life name

HL2 is to HL what DNF is to DN3D. In Half Life, Gordon is just a guy that happens to be best equipped for the situation, but in Half Life 2 he's treated like a rockstar. Kinda like Duke Nukem 3D you just wanted to save the babes, now you've got a fan club and people following you around begging for your autograph

Because they felt people were becoming too violent. Designers didn't want to advocate negligent homicide and outright murder mayhem. They wanted SCIENCE to seem prestigious NOT copacetic.

Bombastic I know. Presumable yes. True? Possibly, who really knows?

It's just a videogame...

Yes it is. And? What are you doing in steam forums if you're going to say that
Because the guy I was answering to took this too seriously.

Also HL² is at least good unlike DNF

Hey, Duke Nukem Forever is good, it's just boring. No shortage of similar games to choose from since about 2005-10

Not fair to judge a game BAD for being boring or, lackluster. Duke Nukem Forever wasn't and isn't bad, it was too little way too late.

Bandwagons, they either love you or they hate you.

If it's boring how can it be good? Especially after a 10+ years of teasing.

Because you truly don't understand what good means and what bad means. There is no middle ground with you. That's the idea of rating things from 1 to 10. To get a better feel OR estimate of the middle ground.

Boring doesn't make something bad, that means you and I personally find it to be boring, that doesn't make it bad, it just doesn't entertain us, that's not bad. Completely different. Judging should be fair NOT SELF-CENTERED.

There are things I will agree are great engineering and artistic, a great product but I personally find it to be ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ boring. And that's the state of neutral, it's not bad, it's lackluster.

You don't have to worry about removing friendly fire because you can still kill them

console: ent_create ai_relationship targetname newrel subject !player target npc_citizen disposition 1 reciprocal 0 startactive 1

disposition 1 is also known as "hate" relationship and that means you have the right to kill citizens. Just make sure you don't make reciprocal to "1" because everyone's gonna kill you.

Maybe it's because they move about idiotically. They run directly at a player or randomly wherever. It doesn't seem casual, it's aggressive. So it's easy to mistake NPCs for enemies simply because of their erratic behavior.

If you wanna kill citizens without cheating, you have to use the props around you

Indeed, my point was purely that both games had the protagonist become 'sequel rockstars'

You know what's the most wrong about their animations? They will look at you or their focus of interest even when it's to their side. So if they look at you but are moving to the side or backwards, they do it while looking at you. This is such an unnatural looking movement. People tend to face the direction theyre walking. Very bizarre thing to miss when one of the selling points of the game was its 'realistic' facial animation

Not to get too off topic, but Black Mesa re-uses a lot of assets from HL2 such as decals and sounds, but the most noticeable to me was the animations for citizens and combine taken from HL2. I almost immediately notice the guard at the beginning greeting me at the tram doing this same weird 'walking side to side or backwards while looking at me' stuff that rebels and barney will do in HL2. HECU also melee like combine soldiers instead of front kicking you like they did in HL. lame

I've played the HL2 beta leak and they say "Freeman watch what you're doing"

Have you tried Brutal Half-Life? It's basically Scientist Slaughter Simulator: Now with Extra Gore!

Yeah i've tried brutal half-life, it's pretty fun. Makes the game very satisfying, all the guns feel like they have more impact.
