Not sure why they changed it, I'm guessing they figured it didn't make sense. Why would you carry an MP5 or any 9mm carbine over a CAR15 or while carrying explosive grenades? Doesn't make sense. Why choose 9mm over 5.56mm? If you waned to minimize range and penetration and potential collateral damage as well as use non & less lethal grenades with the launcher then an MP5 with a launcher would have a special purpose.
I'm guessing it was chosen for the cool factor, this was the late 1990's and the MOVIE ... ERASER!

Why would something Gearbox ADDED long after be canon? It's too trivial to be canon, a minor detail. I know the HD pack came with Blue Shift. It's a model swap, why would it matter? It ALL occurs within the same game world within the same timeline.
Also the Marines weren't associated with nor attached to a Unit (HECU) until Black Mesa.
Bad jokes aside as Laidlaw said it's "canon until proven otherwise" and I'm pretty sure that nothing in Half-Life 2 and after are unconfirming any of the two.
in the case of m16 being cannon then I would still expect the veriaty of weapons MP5 being one of em
Despite only have 1 in the game (m16 just being a re modle of the mp5) Why wouldnt both be used in reality?
There bound to come in with Smg's and rifles Not just 1 or the other
Id assume the m16 would be more common because of it being heavier weaponry
Could see Both being taken, for a situation in which they're going to need to carry a lot of rounds because more MP5 Magazines could be strapped down, twice as many as the AR15 Magazines. BUT this IS frictional therefore gear consolidation is not applicable.
Since the MP5 and CAR15 are roughly the same length, 14.4" Barrel version isn't much longer and 9mm Luger versus 5.56mm ammo weighs nearly the same and both guns are nearly the same weight carrying one over the other has it's advantages. The CAR15 (Now M4 Carb) has triple the range and power plus penetration. The ability to consolidate more ammo to carry on person would be the ONLY real advantage of the MP5.
The MP5 does pull and handle a LITTLE better than the M4, it's not as cumbersome. BUT this doesn't apply to a fictional game, it's for the sake of realism and why they would select one over the other. :)
yea my post was kinda about throwing some realism into the post. i would find it hard to beleve that 1 or the other would just be taken in reality
and as you said that takeing stuff for the mp5 may be lighter etc Maybe when they first arive it would make sense that the mp5 is used more often But going agenst some of the things Xen has to offer maybe theyd bring heavier weapons in the long run to take down heavier targets? (would seem necaeserry)
But yea i would find it hard to beleve that theyd all just come in with a mp5 or the CAR15
and going by what you said the mp5 would be way more common at early stages and when groups are sent to find freeman etc
But if they set up a defense somewhere or forced to be on an offense id expect them to take in more CAR15 or whatever because alot of things from xen are really damn strong and would be hard to take down with an mp5 xD
