But it's not bad, it's worth a gander.
Some parts are not only on par with HL, they are also better. Blue Shift is nice, every fan of the first game should play it.
My only complaint was that it was too short. Shorter than Op For.
Correction, if you ignore this comment you're not missing anything.
But now, it can be disregarded. BUT if you really want to check it out just to see or experience it then it's playable and enjoyable, but not exceptional.
So "lackluster" would be the best way to define it.
Blue Shift is better than Opposing Force in some ways, Opposing Force is better than Blue Shift in some ways. I can't say which I like more because I like both for different reasons. About half of each expansions campaign is boring or annoying, but the other half is really enjoyable and interesting
I liked the idea of teaming up with the scientists to try to escape Black Mesa in Blue Shift, making me feel more like an average guy than HL, but the sequences where I'm having to wait around to flip switches was lame. I liked how OpFor delved more into the conspiracy angle, and the displacer allowed me to find cool secret areas, but Black Ops and Race X are so f*cking annoying to fight
Both of them improved on Xen by revisiting it, showing more about the research taking place and even the Xen creatures being held for experimentation on Earth. They must have been traveling to Xen and finding fauna to experiment on for some time, probably why they used the portal opened to Xen during the resonance cascade as a way to launch an attack on Black Mesa. It showed that humans weren't just innocent victims, and added weight to what the Nihilanth was saying at the end of HL
The real MVP of expansions is Decay, though. Very underrated. There's a key to switch between Gina and Colette so it can be played as single player. Harder, but do-able. Shame there still isn't an official PC release
