A) Run away after being spotted, place it to a wall and wait for the enemy to come.
B) Place it beforehand and lead an enemy to a previously set mine.
Both tactics ruins the game's flow. Instead of waiting an enemy to come to you or lead them from one point to another, you can easily shoot them with any other weapon. Even satchels, grenades, hivehand and snarks can be utilized then and there, so why run away or wait when you can deal with them the very moment you see them?
It can be a fun weapon but far from useful. The only time it is used is when you run out of explosives to kill a Gargantua and you just spam-arm it under it's feet to blow it.
Pointless weapons of HL, ranked from worst to best:
Tripmine > Snark > Hivehand
tripmines are mostly useful for boobytrapping enemy spawns once you know where they are during scripted events
and i actually find setting tripmines and then baiting enemies into following me to it very satisfying, like bro do you not notice the big blue laser beam? lol
Ironically, it's the one encounter in HL that snark actually comes in handy, not tripmines. Go up to the balcony and spam them down.
Thing is, you don't make a game assuming the player knows where enemies are going to be spawning.
Satisfying but pointless, I just shoot it, then and there. Why jump through hoops?
Satchels are not really good for tanks and other immobile turrets type entities, because you need to shoot at their breakable part, which is at the top. Satchels cannot be easily thrown like grenades. They land at the bottom, indestructible part.
The best way to deal with tanks is the crowbar. Jump on top, hit it a bunch of times, jump back and finish it off with a couple of pistol bullets.
the player wont know where spawns will be on a first play through, but it's fun on repeated playthroughs
Not really.
you can dance around them while tossing them onto the destructable part, since they turn slowly enough they cant hit you. you can wack them with the crowbar but that's not as fun to me as blowing something the f*ck up
