Half-Life

Who is Barney?
I always wonder, when you start up HL: Blue shift, you play as Barney, stuck at the door in the tram tunnels, but the guard that lets you out of the tram says "Catch me later, I'll buy ya a beer." But in Half-Life 2, Barney says "About that beer I owed ya." So you wern't playing Barney in Blue Shift...because someone else was at the door banging, while Barney was letting you out at your stop, but in Black Mesa, The one that lets you out talks about how Barney is behind on his Quota, so is Barnthe door banging, or letting you out?

Barney could have said that before the game started.

Every security guard, apparently, but that's just because they're all basically the same person.

They're different though

Face palm U-U if you don't want use the canon story its your problem if you want start imaging things without sense. However, that Barney is that guy that you described perfectly hitting the door. There are recreational places where not only scientists, but security guards, were together and having fun. It's clear that Barney was a Freeman's friend and they could have played poker some times. I can imagine lots of reasons to support what Hunter #357 said, lots of security guards could have said you about buying you a beer for several and different reasons.

In addition from a videogame point of view its true that all of them are barneys since their file name is called in such way, that model is the same for the whole barneys. And it is evident that every single security guard can say you eventually that thing about the beer. Because all of them can reproduce the same sentences. But just before the accident.

There are two different guard models used. The guards you meet all throughout Half-Life and Half-Life: Blue Shift are of the Barney model, and the other one, who first shows up in Opposing Force, is referred to as Otis, iirc. So you are playing as a Barney, just not the one who greets you on the way in. No, you're playing the one who Gordon sees stuck on the other side of the door.

The Barney whom you meet in Half-Life 2 is the same one you meet at the beginning of the first game.

Barney can generally mean security guards at Black Mesa (the thin ones) and also a specific charcter from Blue Shift (the same guard at the beginning of half life banging the door, eventhough he should not have his armor and helmet in Blue Shift) and HL2.

Basically, all barneys (guards) have the same personality because the game coded them that way so they all told gordon about buying him beer if interacted before the incident. The prominent barney character could have said that as well before the game started.

"Hey, catch me later I'll buy you a beer," 20 years later... "About that beer I owed ya"

Barney is the security guard who is knocking on the door when you are on the tram at the start of the game. I think he's holding a torch as well.
