Black screen with white square in the top left corner when launching

Upon launching the game i get a black screen and a white square in the top left corner. Nothing happens. I can press space and i hear some sort of sound indicating pressing something otherwise nothing else. I can tab out and back in but all that does is make the white part go away so all that is left is just a black screen.

Try going to properties -> Set launch options and enter this line:
-fullscreen -w 1920 -h 1080

(Assuming your screen resolution is 1920x1080, otherwise enter other numbers).

Unfortunately this doesn't work. Perhaps i'm doing something wrong but i still get the same issue

Here are more "set launch options" commands that can be used for video.
-fullscreen : no framed window
-windowed : game will be in a framed window
-noboarder : removes frame from around a window
-gl : open_gl graphics rendering
-software : CPU graphic rendering
-normal : monitor size 4:3 ratio
-wide : monitor size 16:9or10 ratio
+gl_vsync 0 : turns off verical Synch in open_gl rendering (can improve FPS)
-nofbo : this turns off some advance rendering in open_gl (can improve FPS)
-nomsaa : turns off AA ;Anti-Aliasing (can improve FPS)
-gl_aniso 0 : Removes anisotrophic filtering (can improve FPS)
-w 800 : width screen resolution size (other sizes can be used)
-h 600 : height screen resolution size (other sizes can be used)

I tried everything and -software worked, but the quality is terrible, does anyone else has a solution that lets me use gl rendering?

dude I'm having very similar issues. would you mind sharing your hardware? mainly GPU. if I had to guess you have AMD, possibly an RX 580

luckily I am able to actually play the game but the whole white square black screen thing is an issue I have related to capturing screenshots using printscreen, they all come out exactly as you describe, black screen or black screen with a white square

to help you in your particular case, since no one has suggested it, have you tried all the compatibility options for hl.exe? disable fullscreen optimization, run as admin, the dpi scaling behavior below that. I really had no luck with any of my issues doing any of that stuff but it might make it so you can actually see the game. it's supposed to flash that crap and then proceed to the game

I got mine to work now. I just set launch options to -software and then set my resolution.

yeah software is in no way a solution lol. I mean yeah I guess if you need to take a basic screenshot it would work for that and look kind of bad but software is in no way a playable mode

I cannot use OpenGL because whenever i try to start a map the game crashes but if i run in software mode it works fine

define "works fine" it doesn't struggle to run at 30 fps? and looks terrible with absolutely no texture filter, smacks the cpu around and uses no 3d acceleration. sounds like it works dandy alright, way better than fixing your gpu drivers or troubleshooting
