you needa do backhopping, bunny hopping was taken out of the engine quite a few patches ago

The steam version or latest version of half-life has a speed cap, if thats what you mean if you don't a lot of speed and you can't bhop with spacebar so type in console "bind mwheeldown +jump" and spam your mouse wheel downwards. Also when bunnyhopping do not use the forward or backward keys. Only left and right (A and D).
For additional info check out this site: https://wiki.sourceruns.org/wiki/Bunnyhopping

You've got the games mixed up. What you're reffering to is Half-life 2 which is true. On the old engine of hl2 there was standard bhopping but on the current/new orange box engine the devs made a system for the game to detect if you're moving too fast forwards to give you backwards speed but when you turn around and bunnyhop you get speed and even more from the new system.

Thanks for telling me. I was talking about this Half life and strafe jumping. Is there any way to increase the cap or stop it? I want to do it forwards.

To remove the cap you must play the WON version/retail version. Check this out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6DQsnVo5A7s&list=PLfgEKs1V0wWc3A6kymkCzloHYTkwcsGYY
